That’s terrible. Some people are just horrible individuals, regardless of what their political views are.
I experienced something in 2008 a few days after the presidential election, although not on that level. I was riding on the NYC Subway. There was a black woman sitting across from me, and she was taking up 3 seats - sitting in one, and bags on the seats on either side of her. The subway car was pretty full. A white man got on, and asked her to please move her bags so he could sit. She started yelling about how “now us black people gonna take down the whiteys, because a black man is president! Now you all gonna pay!”
I have a friend who is a hardcore Trump supporter. He has multiple Trump signs and banners up in front of his house. He’s had times where he was walking down the street with a MAGA hat and strangers have knocked it off his head and stomped on it or spit on it. He’s had the front of his house vandalized.
I saw that, and was horrified by it.
My wife’s best friend, who is extremely liberal, was visiting over the weekend, and this actually came up in a discussion. She said that she thinks it was likely a liberal who was behind it, trying to make people think this is what life will be like with Trump as president.
I have no view on who did it yet and prefer that we wait for FBI/official investigation to get to the bottom of this. The same point can be turned around and make the argument on both sides right now.
I do however think if it was a liberal then they should have given a donation to the election rather than do this.
Was this in a public building? I’d have trouble believing someone would do this in a work situation where the person could be followed to their place of employment.
Unless the law changed, in my area I don’t think it would have counted as assault. Even when I was actually punched in the face years ago I was told it would only be harassment as I didn’t sustain serious injuries. I’d like to think if I was a bystander overhearing threats I would have brought it up to the bus driver and let them decide how to deal with it, but in this situation I thought it best to just deboard. And reporting it to the police didn’t seem like it would be worth it (“Yes hello, a man I refused to look at threatened me, I have no description of him”). There were cameras that theoretically have audio, so if I tried hard enough maybe something would come of it, but it didn’t seem worth it.
One distinction I think we need to draw. There are bad actors on both sides of the aisle - it’s why I’m not on Twitter. But we need to talk about leadership. On the right, it’s Trump saying some things that I find offensive. And while Harris said some mean things about Donald, I don’t find Kamala’s rhetoric to be nearly as inflammatory. I think it’s different when the president elect says it vs some rando on Twitter or GoA. I’m old school, and I feel like Trump should be working to be the president for everyone.
Anecdotally, my wife used to work in Texas a lot, and she said the climate changed during Trump’s first term. She said people would be sort of casually misogynistic in ways they weren’t before. Calling her sweetie, asking her to get them a coffee.
I do worry for some groups. Minorities, the LGBTQ community, particularly the T part of that group. I think a lot of things that Republican leaders (not just Donald) say will embiggen people to harass or even assault people will cause material harm.
I guess that depends on your own views/perceptions. I have some friends who were huge Trump supporters. They wore MAGA hats and had signs in the yard. Before the election one was essentially called a Nazi and another called a racist. Those seems like inflammatory remarks and also were first said by leadership (Harris).
I don’t disagree with anything else you said I just hate how it is always “one side bad one side good” when in reality they are both saying nasty things and I just wish everyone could get along and not have it get to that point
i believe she really went out of her way to not call potential voters these things. i think anybody who wanted some possible trump supporters to vote for them were very wary of repeating hillary’s “basket of deplorables” comment.
trump, on the other hand, called many americans all sorts of names.
Agreed. Harris did NOT insult Trump supporters. In fact, when Biden called them “garbage”, she responded by saying, “I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for.”
I definitely respect her for that. Not enough to have voted for her, but I did appreciate it.
I don’t recall Kamala saying Trump was a Nazi. She did mention that John Kelly called him a fascist and she agreed with him, iirc. Trump had a heckler at a rally and said he should have been roughed up (this actually happened several times). When Kamala got heckled she made a joke. When Trump lost, we got Jan 6. When Kamala lost we got… a lot of upset people who did what? Nothing.
I’m willing to ‘both sides’ some issues, but when it comes to leadership, nope.
I wasn’t born in the USA. The USA and Israel were the greatest deterrents to majority rule where I come from. So when USA citizens take it for granted that they deserve freedom I really wonder if most even understand what freedom is.
