Trump Tariff Watch

More lanes going north-south sadly. Our economy was built on the flaw that the USA would always be our friend.

this is it, right? There will be actual logistical challenges with moving goods from BC to ON.

The 1, and, I assume, the Railway.
Probably easier to take The 90 across the USA.

I seriously would be buying a bunch of the “Sorry about our President” shirts someone posted here.

And throwing them away before re-entering the country.

I think it’s a case of give them a bit of time to get new stuff on the shelf. Takes time to set up new arrangements and start bringing on stock.

I’m not sure how widespread it is, but I’ve heard for at least some of it, the supplier doesn’t get paid til the product is sold.

My TV told me 51% of imported fresh fruit and 69% of imported fresh vegetables in the US are from Mexico. We 20% of imported fresh vegetables are from Canada.

There are massive greenhouse operations in southwestern Ontario that primarily sell vegetables to the US. To me this is an example of an industry that should pivot to selling vegetables to the Greater Toronto area rather than have Toronto importing vegetables.

Import substitution will be a key to Canada’s future. Where that is not possible we need to establish trading relationships with countries other than the US so as not to be overly dependent upon the US.

I know a lot of tomatoes and cucumbers in the supermarket here come from Canada greenhouses, and particularly when those veggies are not in season here.

We just got back (maybe just in time?). My SO let me do most of the talking. It was difficult for her.

I will just wear my MEC backpack when I go this summer to differentiate myself from the Americans.

Did you get grief coming back?

Trump is waving a poster board around with reciprocal tariffs on it, and there are some big numbers on it. 34% China, 20% EU, 46% Vietnam, 32% Taiwan…

I can’t see the full list because the podium is in the way. UK, Brazil, Chile, and Singapore are the low mark at 10%.

Stock market is dropping.

No, quicker than usual actually. She has a passport and I have a green card so we went through that line (same line). Foreign passport holders may have had a different experience.

They are effectively targeting the entities with the highest trade imbalances with the US (from a goods perspective)

I can’t see Canada and Mexico on the board but the tariffs he has already levied on us exceed 10%.

Here is the board:

To Trump’s credit he’s a good marketer. Why the prior administration couldn’t figure out how to loudly champion the US’ successes is beyond me.
