Canada will not meet Trump in the middle on tariffs as his tariffs are a clear contravention of USMCA, or CUSMA as we call it in Canada.
Canada accepting a compromise on tariffs would be accepting illegal activity on the part of the US and rewarding its bad behaviour. Trump has to find another way out of the mess he has created.
That definitely seems to be his negotiation tactic.
He just wants the countries that have been tariffed to give him something quickly in return.
He then turns around and calls it a massive win
So now he is at the bargaining stage as Canada hasn’t budged and US business leaders must be lobbying him 24/7 as they see the flashing red warning signs of a recession.
If you dig in and don’t budge this is very likely to blow back on Trump because it will be very difficult to spin things when US companies are damaged, and people start losing their jobs.
I am also curious as to how Mexico will retaliate. They are more exposed, so its possible they might negotiate with Trump in order to reduce the damage to their economy (as it is quite fragile right now)
Unless you go to r/conservative, there is nothing that Canada has done that I can understand an American complaining about. And I say that as someone who gets irritated by people apologizing unnecessarily.
I predict that his “massive win” will be that Mexico and Canada will agree to renegotiate CUSMA early in return for dropping tariffs. That is not much of a win for Trump since he is already ignoring CUSMA. And any new trade deal will be worthless if the US doesn’t honour it.
I’m still wondering what the legal basis for his ignoring CUSMA. Is there something in it that states “if fentanyl smuggling rises, then the President can unilaterally increase tariffs”? He seems to do it because no one will stop him.
We probably had a perfect trade deal until Biden came in, and he messed everything up and now Canada is killing us on trade - Biden made it so they’re ripping us off.
It never left. I’ll let you google your own sites.
The manufacturing output peaked around 2019, dipped a bit with the pandemic, and is now rising once again.
The jobs left, no doubt. (Damn that robotic technology!). And they ain’t comin back, for sure. The world moves on and on.
Canada will soon get its Lindt chocolate from Europe rather than the US. Cadbury has a huge factory in Canada and Hershey has several. Cadbury is my preference
The car industry is a good example of how technology has hugely reduced the workforce numbers. Makes the billions of dollars in subsidies that governments give car companies to build plants a poor use of taxpayer money.
You’ve got a clear eye. I’m just dismayed how the propaganda has taken root. The jobs left. The us is still a manufacturing giant. It’s the stock and bond holders who are smiling. They get subsidy after after subsidy…all cheered on by those left behind. So sad.
The US-Canada are tightly linked in the production of cars and trucks. Ontario has the aluminum and the hydro energy to smelt it. There are a lot of aluminum castings in today’s vehicles. The parts go back and forth across the border multiple times in the manufacturing process. If tariffs are gonna be levied each trip..yeepers!
Strangely, the beef industry has a similar relationship with Mexico. Those steers cross the southern border multiple times. Born on one side, raised on another, fattened and slaughtered back again. Might want to look towards lowering your beef intake gradually, starting now.
And I bet you remember back when Trump started out long ago, complaining that Hillary was a terrible deal maker. He was gonna fix those outrageous trade deals, pronto. He has had a hard on for NAFTA for a long time.
