Do you really expect little things like contracts or legality to stop our soon-to-be felon-in-chief?
No I don’t but I can still be disappointed that this is the way the USA will be operating for the next four years. I think it will hurt the US as well as other countries.
If it’s such an easy fix why hasn’t the US succeeded already?
That was one of my points as well. Trump is deluding himself if he thinks Canada or Mexico can create total border security.
So Trump will put tariffs on allies first day and let Putin keep some of Ukraine. It’s going to be an upside down world for the next four years.
Here is what Trump will do:
- Enact tariffs through executive order
- Oversee a bunch of chaos
- Roll back tariffs a few months later and claim victory
It’s a bully’s negotiation tactic.
Canada and maybe Mexico will make some kind of at least token concession. That, combined with complaints from constituents about new difficulties in exporting due to retaliatory measures, will prompt Trump to declare victory and back off.
I’d think this is going to blow up the auto-industry. I’m curious if this mean more European products in Canadian grocery stores.
Mostly agree with this. Probably take a bit longer than a few months though as the economic damage will lag quite a bit.
I am not expecting Canada to buckle quickly (while they will be damaged they can endure some of the pain) but Mexico is heavily exposed on the tariff front. They (Mexico) are already facing economic headwinds, so the timing of the tariffs will make things much worse for them (this makes it likely they will agree to give Trump concessions).
Obviously Biden spent 4 years pressing the “more fentanyl” button when he wasn’t pressing the “increase gas prices” button.
I think that part of the challenge for Mexico is that resolving some of Trump’s demands would effectively require Mexico to allow American military intervention on their territory.
That’s a third rail in Mexican politics.
I tend to agree. A non-productive exercise.
I am annoyed by the Canadian media and opposition parties asking the government for details of its strategy for dealing with this threat. The Liberals have been planning for this for months and I don’t see any advantage of telling Trump the details of their strategy!
I expect it will go the way of the CUSMA deal where Trump claimed victory even though little changed.
Fun fact when my wife was in labor I discovered there’s some kind of fentanyl in the epidural
Well, this is going to be interesting.
When I had a colonoscopy I woke up during then was immediately out again. They gave me fentanyl to put me back out. I had a sense of euphoria the rest of the day.
Sounds like you had a better physical experience than my wife, although we did gain a human
True, overall, for a whole economy, on average. Basic Macroeconomics.
BUT, people live at their own Micro level.
At the Micro level, some people will go without that “other thing.” Thus, CEO’s of “other things” should actually be worried.
People who need those “other things” to survive should be worried.
Also, what needs to be told over and over is that consumers pay for tariffs, one way or another. Either by paying for the tariffed product or paying more for a domestic version of the tariffed product.
I can easily see Trump punishing large swaths of “enemies” via tariffs for not voting for him.
His solution is to execute anyone involved in trafficking.
Finally, something that a majority of Americans of all political stripes agree upon!
