I was seeing similar comments on Reddit. We produce a lot of the same things as these countries.
FTA will always have preliminary quotas and limits.
Your selection of fresh fruits is going to improve from what I can see. Beef will also get cheaper in Canada, alongside a few other food options.
I would say this is generally good news in terms of keeping food inflation down.
For oil/energy/minerals etc it just means another market for Canada (as Mercosur countries still import a lot of their energy needs).
Will be helpful for Canadian manufacturers imo
I’m already amazed at how much South American produce I see at Costco. Lots of Guatemalan veggies and watermelon.
Taxpayers will be on the hook for this as well:
Earlier this month, retail giant Costco sued the Trump administration in a bid to preserve its right to reclaim the tariffs it had paid. About 40 other legal briefs have been filed in the Supreme Court case in opposition to Trump’s signature tariffs, including from the US Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s largest business association.
How does Costco have standing to sue, when tariffs are paid by foreign countries?
Here are the exports snapshot for Canada.
Diversification is the name of the game really. You have to find new markets to replace the US.
On New Year’s Day, the Italian government said the US Department of Commerce had slashed the planned additional tariffs on the products from as much as 92 per cent to a range of between 2 and 14 per cent.
Wish the Department of Commerce would do the same for Canada’s unfairly targeted softwood lumber exports. Maybe Canada needs an attractive, right wing woman leader to get fair treatment from Trump
Ha ha, soft wood and Trump.
Trump has driven us into China’s arms so I don’t see much downside in expanding our trade relationship with China. The USA is already hurting us with its economic warfare. US car companies are cutting back Canadian production so let’s invite BYD in in return for China getting rid of its punitive tariffs on us.
Conversely, Canada and Mexico don’t need cars made in the USA. Chinese imports would be cheaper and just as good. Trump quote.
“The problem is, we don’t need their product. You know, we don’t need cars made in Canada. We don’t need cars made in Mexico. We want to make them here. And that’s what’s happening,” he said.
If Trump isn’t careful, he may make trade with the US irrelevant.
He forgets, the population in the US is only around .35 billion. The population outside the US is 7.8 billion.
Another interesting aspect is that to build the F-35, they brought in a number of international partners to help cover development costs. If they push away all their partners, can they afford to build their next fighter?
[red]easily, if they keep the tariff proceeds instead of giving tariff dividends to the public[/red]
Trump would like to see a 600 billion increase in the budget of the War department. With that increase I would say it would be affordable. 6
Canadians now able to get cheap Chinese EVs.
Looks like they can bring in 50k evs. previously they had a 100% tariff on them. Now they’ll have 15% but we can now sell canola to china.
not perfect for the auto industry, but that dinosaur needs to die anyway. and I’m surprised Trump hasn’t responded.
Great news for Canada getting rid of most of the Chinese tariffs on our agricultural products. Trump will be annoyed we’re getting friendly with China but he has forced us into that position. Chinese EVs are welcome.
If I can get a chinese EV for $15K, I’m gonna go all vancouver hippie and get one.
I have a full size pickup that I use frequently for pickup type uses, but I’d like something a bit less big for just driving around town. Getting a smaller car or EV doesn’t make sense at regular prices. At $15K, not sure if I’m quite there on second car yet, but it’s getting close.
