That is why I am skeptical it will work for Canada. Only works if we can export the cars built here.
The wage differential limits your export markets, as I am sure you’re aware.
In the case of our exports to the US it is tariffs not higher wages in Canada that limit our exports.
Oh, totally. That’s what NAFTA was supposed to encourage. But unfortunately the US elected someone who doesn’t want free trade and will use any shred of power to prevent it.
The Trump Administration is determined to bring Canada to its knees. Too bad there is no such thing as a “piling on” penalty in international trade! The reality is that the existing onerous US tariffs on the applicable goods have already killed those Canadian exports and related jobs so increasing the tariffs is meaningless. We must focus on other markets.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signalled on Sunday that the Trump administration is still considering imposing an additional tariff on Canadian imports, creating more uncertainty in a trade war that is wreaking havoc on Canada’s steel, aluminum, automobile and lumber sectors.
Yep, our Prime Minister has stated repeatedly that he’s planning on what he can control, and not what he can’t control (i.e. Trump’s tariff’s changing daily). One assumes that the plan going forward takes into account tariffs going up or down. So now that they might go up, no real impact on the plan - it’s what’s expected.
Carney’s talking budget now. There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on. Lots more money in military. A lot of spending on long term investment stuff. Gonna spend some money which my small brain says =bad, but I also know that it’s nowhere near that simple and actually spending could actually be good - and I assume that Carney knows all this from basic principles.
One of the nice things about this guy is I don’t even feel like I need to have a judgement on what he’s doing. I just assume that he’s smarter and more knowledgeable than I am, so if I disagreed then I’d just be wrong because I’m stupid.
This is where I am at as well. Time will tell. Just hope he doesn’t lose the confidence vote on the Budget and we can plunged into another Federal election. Surely enough Opposition MPs see the folly of that.

I’ve wondered about that, what the general populations reaction to another election. I feel it would either decimate the libs or the cons, but I dunno which. whoever gets blamed for the election I guess.

I feel like people think Carney is competent, and are largely ignoring Poilievre, but I could be wrong. This isn’t Carney’s first disaster he’s had to manage through. Poilievre seems to be stuck in attack dog mode.
ETA: it also feels to me that with the exception of Alberta and Saskatchewan, the province’s are largely playing nice with one another. I think Smith is largely a traitor.

I’d like to think that, but am concerned that I could be wrong. How many people floating around out there are like the folks in PP’s riding? Some anyway. There’s some where i live. There’s some where I grew up back home…I have some extended family driving around with F Trudeau on their truck. Enough? not sure, not confident.
Normally Canada overall wouldn’t be that extreme but post covid, who knows anymore.
BC is cooperating better with the Feds than Ontario as it has pulled back from running its anti-tariff ads on US television.

Yeah, and shame on Newsweek for burying this in the story - taking it relatively seriously rather than just calling out the dumb*ssery.
Going over the arguments today and it definitely looks like Trump is toast.
Without Congressional approval, Trump doesn’t really have a leg to stand on.
Both Roberts and Gorusch very much against the logic being deployed for the tariffs by Trump.
He might pivot to using some other ancient law on the books, but he will not be able to use IEEPA again.

Hope you’re right but Congress can authorize Trump’s tariffs?
I don’t think they could keep with his taco-ing. Every time he declares a new tariff, Congress needs to be available to vote on it. By the time they get around to that, he might have changed his mind several times.
