Trump Says the Darndest Things!

He apparently hasn’t encountered a new shiny thing to distract him.

Trump lived his entire life doing whatever he wants, he has no notion of morality.

It’s going to be a “fun” 4 years.

Perhaps he’s jealous of Putin getting a chunk of Ukraine?

I think there is a legitimate argument that Greenland is of strategic interest to the US related to the militarization of the arctic.

Fortunately, Denmark is an ally through NATO, since the US doesn’t exactly have spare cash to buy and support a colony.

Have you met the US deficit spending? There’s always room

I am reminded of what’s in my bag to put under my wife’s family’s Christmas tree for her: a collection of Zimbabwe dollar bills, denominated in billions and more.

(She likes collecting foreign currency, and her “nice” present was a combined birthday/Christmas/25th anniversary gift, already given.)

Canada has already acknowledged joint responsibility with the US for its Arctic security in its recent Arctic defence policy. Cheaper for the US to do it that way versus buying Nunavut from us.

:joy: those are notes from the 1997 to 2009 period right? Bearer cheques they were called. Iirc they had no proper bank notes from 2003/4 iirc. That was a terrible period. Inflation came back around 2017 again but the economy is basically dollarised.

What’s the concern there? Is it a fear Russia can come round the short way?

But remember: Starting 20 January, Canada is apparently a national security threat to the US.

Since the height of the Cold War in the 1950s, there has been a concern of Russian missiles heading to the US via the Canadian Arctic. NORAD (history below) was set up in the mid-50s as a joint Canada-US security operation. Its mandate has spread to naval issues as the Arctic has warmed up.

Canada has a strategic geographic location for US security. Most US Presidents have worked cooperatively with us on defence as a result. I would have thought Trump would have learned that in his first term but…

I seem to recall that the US received some pretty good territory bargains from other nations over the years (Alaska, Louisiana Purchase, Manhattan) and the nations affected (Russia, France, Algonquin) haven’t threatened to take them back. Only powerful bullies like Trump have that prerogative, I guess.

I think Russian state TV has made a few noises about the sale of Alaska having been improper, this voiding the transaction…but theoretically that’s not Putin speaking.

Theoretically.

And we also took a lot of stuff by force without paying anything for it, like most of the rest of the country.

Despite my rants against Trump, I am glad my province borders on Alaska as a US state rather than as a Russian province. Happy for my taxes to fund NORAD.

Medvedev has been delegated the role of making the most provocative statements:

Absolutely

The US has had it’s eye on Greenland for decades for strategic purposes:

However tweeting nonsense to the Danes is unlikely to help accomplish anything here, and probably more likely to make matters worse.
