Trump Arrest Watch

I have been doing yoga for 60 years and have not shrunk at all despite now being in my 70’s. The yoga was a factor I believe: a lot of spine stretching.

I believe it. Older people shrink because the tissue between their vertebrae wears down and results in the vertebrae being closer together. If you keep your spine healthy you can greatly slow down the rate at which this occurs.

Reportedly the Trump team has decided to end attempts to move the GA case to federal court. The pundits are debating what the long game is here.

Two theories I’ve heard:

  1. Motions to move the case might require Trump to testify. He saw how poorly that went for Meadows, who may have committed perjury in his hearing.
  2. The GA case will be on TV, and we all know how Trump loves the camera.

I’'m sure it’s worth 100 times its stated value.

Scott Hall, one of the 18 defendants charged along with former President Donald Trump for allegedly interfering with the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, pleaded guilty to the charges against him Friday.

Under the terms of the deal, he’s being sentenced to five years probation, and agreed to “testify truthfully in this case and all further proceedings.”

Not breaking news but still more evidence of Trump hiring " the best people"

In an earlier article, I thought it had been said that Trump’s attorneys actually requested a bench trial.

For a civil case against someone whom most potential jurors are likely to have a bias for or against, that doesn’t seem necessarily like a bad idea.

They want a jury for a criminal trial, where one cultist can prevent a conviction; but in a civil trial, there’s too much chance that the verdict will be driven by whether there are more “biased for Trump” or more “biased against Trump” people on the jury. If the judge is as objective as they’re supposed to be, you eliminate that randomness and can focus on the merits.

Of course, that assumes that the lawyers don’t piss off the judge.

EDIT: Of course, the other possibility is that by going for a bench trial, Trump gets to claim that his rights are being violated, creating an appearance of martyrdom that will help his Presidential campaign and fundraising, and maybe open a couple of paths for potential future appeals.

Or their client. Maybe the strategy is to appeal the verdict on account of the Judge must have been biased because our client threatened/insulted him so much he couldn’t possibly be fair!

Tl;dr: Trump might actually be accurate in complaining about being “denied” a jury, although his complaints oversimplify the situation. (There is no guaranteed right to a jury under this section on NY law.)

Did my once a month peek into what Fox News is feeding its followers and the lead story was this one attacking Letitia James.

Trump has asked for the Florida trial to start after the election due to Special Counsel’s office being slow in providing discovery.

Didn’t post it, but a couple weeks ago, Special Counsel filed a motion saying that there are 9 documents related to the trial that are so sensitive that they aren’t willing to have Trump and his lawyers view them in a SCIF in Florida, and want those 9 documents to only be available in a SCIF in DC. I found that to be an interesting detail, haven’t seen much press coverage of it.

As i understand it getting a jury trial is a simple as checking the box on the original paperwork which his lawyers did not check.

Did the judge rule, “hey lawyers get your poop together and get the clearances “ or something like that.

not exactly that simple from what I read. but they did not request it which left the discussion of if a jury trial was allowed in a case like this to be be untested/unresolved.

If the CNN article can be believed (a big “if” I realize), that’s not correct.

They were saying that the statute that Trump is being sued under is one where the law specifies that a bench trial is the norm / that there is no entitlement to a jury. If a normal defendant being sued under this statute had requested a jury, the judge would probably deny the request.

I still don’t understand the nuances of law that cause this to “make sense”…but I am aware that the right to a jury in civil proceedings is considerably more limited than most Americans think, for reasons due to complexity of law that I don’t fully appreciate.

Ah ok, I’m guessing if he had requested one it most likely would have been granted in his case. But IANAL
