Today I learned

The moon is 40x the diameter of the Earth away, which if you try visualize with golf ball as the Earth, would put the moon 5.5 feet away. Agree, it definitely seems like it should be closer than that.

From my high school Latin, I knew that “senate” was derived from the Latin word “senatus” but didn’t realize, until I was reading a NY Times book review today on how the gerontocracy run America, that senatus was derived from “senex”, which means “old man”.

I’ve been keeping tabs on the old folks home, including number of deaths while in office:

Woo Hoo, Utah. That one white square. They do actually retire before getting so old as to die. Or we change our minds about them before getting there. The most recent old folks were Hatch and Romney. It would have been interesting had either of them run again instead of retiring as their popularity was waning. Hatch probably would have won again and probably Romney too but more because of his democratic appeal. One of the reasons I favored Romney was that he was already so old that he wasn’t going to be able to serve for decades like Hatch did.

Tomorrow is the first day where it’s unambiguous that if McConnell’s seat is vacated early, no replacement would be appointed before the next term.
