Today I learned

can you correlate that with vodka consumption?

Russia supplies about 7% of the oil the US imports, about the same amount as KSA. Since the US imports about 50% of the oil we use that means about 3.5% of the crude we use comes from Russia.

What happened in 1963 that spiked the longevity of the Russian citizenry?

I’m not sure how much that has changed over time…

If I started the vertical axis at 0, it probably wouldn’t have looked like much of a spike.

IDK, the Berlin wall falls and Male life expectancy plummets 5 years or more? I read that correctly?

Added filters to cigarettes?

that sure is depressing. a 12 yr gap F to M? barely any in longevity since 1959?

I just checked mortality.org… this is actually the most recent data we have. There’s nothing past 2014.

Here’s the calendar year death distribution.

That is pretty awful for males. The Russian Female distribution is actually pretty similar to other European countries.

More depressing stuff here:

Yeah, that made the news at the time. Lots of unemployment, lots of vodka, and deaths from the sort of diseases that pick off people who don’t have enough to eat, like TB, iirc.

TIL how to find the square root of any decimally-represented number by hand. I had never even heard of such a thing until now.

but actually...

That method didn’t quite work for me when I continued on with the sample number. I’m not sure what I’m doing incorrectly.

However, in the comments ā€œBrian Parkā€ explained a slightly different method which I was able to use to calculate 11 places past the decimal point.

Brian Park's comment

At 5:12 you get the 58. A much simpler way to get this is to DOUBLE the EXISTING answer gotten SO FAR. Double 29 = 58. Do the same at 6:41, doubling existing answer (29) to get 582. At 7:08, you talk about decimal point. This is much simpler if you write the answer digit over the last pair dripped down (spacing answer digits out). This way the decimal points will be vertically aligned. At 8:24 you double 2911 to get 5822. To illustrate the alignment, I show the final result calculations aligned as I suggest.
2 9 1. 1 4

58 4 47
4 41
582 6 65

TIL, the word ā€œvenalā€.

That snowboarders who lead with their left foot are said to have a ā€œregularā€ stance whereas snowboarders who lead with their right foot are said to have a ā€œgoofyā€ stance.

Those are the technical terms: ā€œregularā€ and ā€œgoofyā€.

I had no idea.

The same terminology is used for skateboarding, too.

I was goofy. But normally am right handed/footed. It just felt better. (I also play pool lefty, apparently.)

I am right handed but left footed. Anything involving leading with my feet, I do opposite of other right handed folks. I first noticed when I was trying to learn how to cartwheel.

I’m also left eye dominant, but that is less noticeable to me.

secondhand TIL:

Today I learned: the stories about spontaneous combustion of oil-soaked rags (linseed oil, in particular) are true. Well I’ll be durned.

And surfing too. That’s where it originated. I used to be offended, but now wear it as a badge of honor.

Same here. Pretty sure the hands and feet don’t really correlate, even though a priori you would expect it.

From my totally not scientific observations it seems snowboarders are pretty close to half goofy. Definitely not the same as the tiny fraction of left-handers.

:+1:t2:
I was wondering about surfing when Mathman pointed out skateboarding.
