There exists executive services (paid) that do a full work up of everything. I think they take like a day to complete, and they’re done by experts. Perhaps you should consider something like that.
I’ve been thinking about ordering some tests. My sister has PCOS, recently diagnosed. I don’t think I have it, but I’m curious. Also considering the full thyroid test because my doctor always tells me I don’t need it even though I struggle to lose weight and am ALWAYS exhausted. I’d be happy if everything came back normal but it would be good to know for sure.
This might be a bias based upon the type of doctor performing the procedure. For colonoscopies the doctor is more concerned with the patient moving around then preventing pain from the nurses I’ve talked to about colonoscopies. So sedation being recommended is for the doctor’s convenience and not for the patient. I’m guessing OBGYNs are used to women moving during their procedures so they are fine doing the IUD insertion without sedation.
I’ve had an IUD and don’t remember insertion being particularly painful. But then I’ve been told I have a high pain tolerance.
I also had an endometrial biopsy and that’s another one that some ladies find very painful. I heard mixed results from friends and didn’t experience anything horrid.
This raises questions about sedation in general. There are risks with sedation, so it may be desirable to not sedate in questionable cases.
Uh, “gyns are used to dealing with the patient moving”? That’s seriously your answer?
Fwiw, all you need to do during a colonoscopy is lie on your side. It’s not especially hard to stay put. Easier than for an MRI, where you need to stay much stiller, and there are weird scary noises.
Even though you only have to lie on your side for a colonoscopy, gimme some of that sweet, sweet sedation, amirite @John.S.Mill ???
I need a colonoscopy right now!!!

Yeah at first you’re like why are they putting me in this weird, unsustainable position. And then the sedation kicks in and you wake up flat on your back.

got a endometrial biopsy today. well not that i got one. she tried and i was like fuck this, it hurts. IF YOU WON’T SEDATE ME, I AIN’T DOING IT. she sort of acted like i was crazy to suggest sedating me for said horror. so she stopped short when i told her to get that crap out of me now and biopsy was not done at all.
i think she was being overly cautious with even scheduling that and i’m going based on this assumption that i don’t have cancer.
i’m way more concerned with this fatigue right now than the minute chance i have endometrial cancer due to bleeding for a few extra days, which is entirely common for a female my age. so i’m going to assume i don’t have endometrial cancer and that biopsy was to check for the .000005% chance i do.
seems like this is a theme with primary care physicians to say that your TSH levels are normal so you’re good to go just to later find out that you do have a thyroid issue. i’ve heard this from a few people at this point.
it’s frustrating that primary care physicians pretty much put you on your own to figure out what’s wrong with you rather than run more tests or give helpful advice at all.
i have a virtual visit with my pcp’s PA monday. i sent her another message saying bluntly can you run these blood tests please after getting that bullshit sympathy response before and she said to schedule a virtual visit.
I’m not happy when everything comes back normal because I want an answer as to why I’m so crushingly tired and that means I have no answer.
it’s pretty sad that i get better advice on an actuary forum and from my father’s nurse than from actual doctors.
I’m developing a real distrust of medical professionals now. I think I just almost got a biopsy that I flat out didn’t need, but stopped it cause it hurt too much. She still claims I need it, but if a far less invasive ultrasound was normal, why would I need a biopsy for the exact same part? Is she being overly cautious or trying to make money?
regardless, i’m not sticking with this nurse practitioner. I’m not sure I trust her. I only saw her for this bleeding issue because I didn’t have a regular doctor for that and she had availability in that practice while the doctor there did not. I think I want to switch to the doctor there as I don’t think I trust this NP.
my wife has hashimotos and low/normal thyroid levels. has had nodules. has routinely been denied the synthetic boost (synthroid?). it frustrates her to no end. she has a million examples of where she believes she gets substandard care. they sound frustrating. she has a lot going on and just feels bc of that she gets readily downplayed.
what’s her primary symptoms? does she have severe fatigue?
sounds like a lot of people have thyroid conditions even though their thyroid levels are normal.
the character limit restricts me from listing it all.
on top of now being perimenopausal, which brings about some fun, she has a host of auto-immune issues. some have obv flare ups (psoriasis breakouts are noticeable; psoriatic arthritis is not visible but has impact). a form of celiac (DH) that only flares when there’s been a gluten contamination. hashimotos, which has no obv physical impact but she has asked for years for some more aggressive attempt to raise her thyroid levels. if she can be allowed to exist at low normal and feel lousy, she’d like to use drugs to boost her to high normal to see if it improves anything.
Ah so way more symptoms than just debilitating fatigue
Do you have fatigue?
Are Doctors Underestimating the Pain of Endometrial Biopsy? – Mom in Music City
wow, i’m glad i stopped the np before she got to the biopsy part. what she already did was making me feel like i was going to pass out from the pain. i hope i don’t get an infection now. so they put you out for a colonoscopy where it sounds like nbd, but for an endometrial biopsy, they totally downplay it, and you’re not numbed at all and are totally awake. i think it’s not just black women who are not considered here. it’s women in general. somehow pain is just cool with us and this torture procedure for pretty much 0% chance of cancer is just fine.
i’m firing this nurse practitioner asap, and i have no faith in the medical profession at this point.
