MTT was an American conductor, composer, pianist and music pedagogue. He conducted a wide variety of music internationally, with a focus on the works by Gustav Mahler and of contemporary American music, the first to record works by Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, and Steve Reich. In 1987, he founded the New World Symphony, an American orchestral academy in Miami Beach, Florida, serving as its artistic director laureate. He was also music director laureate of the San Francisco Symphony and conductor laureate of the London Symphony Orchestra. His compositions include From the Diary of Anne Frank (1990) Shówa/Shoáh (1995) for the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, and Poems of Emily Dickinson (2002). In 2021, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive type of brain cancer. He died April 22 at age 81.
