The MLS Soccer Thread

Alright! Great weekend! I assume…

NYCFC sign now youngest player ever to sign a first-team contract. Probably won’t be playing on the first team, so not sure if this is all that important. Play in an MLS Soccer game, you get the record, maybe.

I posted this in the Happy Thoughts thread, but it’s worth repeating here as it’s fun: a 17 yo kid that grew up in the neighborhood where I live came on as a late substitute for ATLUTD Sunday. He wound up scoring to clinch it. Doing that at home in your first match before 60k plus fans is quite the memorable experience. Video below

He’s so young he was a ballboy for ATLUTD at the 2018 MLS Cup final, before he eventually joined ATLUTD2.

It’s hard to say what Atlanta will be like this season. First full season for the coach, a number of new faces, and key players not available yet to play. Araujo is a true playmaker that unfortunately got injured Sunday. Fingers crossed that it’s not major.

CCL back at it this week with the round of 8.

Seattle (at home) dominated Leon 3-0. NYCFC (at home) beat a Guatemalan side 3-1. Very good chance of both advancing and guaranteeing 1 MLS team in the finals.

Pumas/Revs and Montreal/Cruz Azul tonight. Both on FS2 I think.

MLS Power Rankings after week 2.

The #12 team has tied the #1 at home and the #4 on the road (and xG were basically even in both games).

Revs beat Pumas 3-0 on a cold and snowy night in Foxboro. Montreal lost 1-0 to Cruz Azul at the Azteca.

Baring a complete collapse, looking like at least 3 MLS teams in the semis.

There have been 5 MLS/Liga MX matchups so far. MLS has won each of their home games 3-0. Liga MX has won each of their home games 1-0.

So you’re saying Montreal still has a chance? They are fortunate to be only down by one goal given how outplayed they were. Hopefully the Montreal fans will be loud in the Big Owe on Wednesday.

Optimistic about winning the next 50 Cups, so need small banners?

Wanted a banner of the same proportions as the pitch

Revs were up 3-0 vs Pumas going into last night. They have an epic choke job, lose 0-3, and then lose the the aggregate in PKs. Montreal ties Cruz Azul 1-1 in Montreal, but lose 2-1 in aggregate. So its Pumas/Cruz Azul in one semitfinal.

NYCFC moves through on the away goal tiebreaker after losing 4-2 in Guatemala. They’ll play either Seattle or Leon. Seattle’s up 3-0, game tonight at Leon. Hopefully Seattle learns from watching the Revs poop themselves.

Sounders (w/o Ruidiaz, Lodeiro, and Yeimar) show the Revs how to close out a 3-0 lead at Leon. Get a 1st half goal and only concede in the 90th minute for a 1-1 draw and a 4-1 win.

It will be a MLS vs Liga MX final. Seattle/NYCFC vs Pumas/Cruz Azul.

Also, Seattle and NYCFC must have some tired legs with the amount of early season games plus travel they have been putting in.

Interesting statistics on international demographics of MLS players.

Americans thinking they can make soccer more appealing to the anti-kiss-your-sister crowd, never learning from past failures.

US Open Cup is back after a 2 year Covid hiatus.

There are a handful of 1st round games tonight and tomorrow. All are on some form of TV (youtube or ESPN+).

Of interest to the greenman household, greenboy’s coach from his U11 level also coaches a local semi-pro team that will be on ESPN+ tomorrow night.

Cross post this from World Cup:

Should hold these in Cincinnati.

Seattle / Pumas in the CCL finals. Seattle probably has the best shot any MLS team has ever had to win it (under the current format).

1st leg in Mexico City 4/27
2nd leg in Seattle 5/4

USOC returns tonight (and tomorrow) with 24 games including 17 MLS/lower division matchups, with most of those having MLS teams on the road.

All games will be on ESPN+.

The highest profile match is tonight at 9:30 CDT where LA Galaxy hosts SD Loyal managed by Landon Donovan.

2 MLS teams go down last night

Detroit City (USL Championship) wins at home vs C-Bus
Union Omaha (USL League 1) gets a goal in the 122’ to force PKs, then wins in PKs at Chicago.
