The MLS Soccer Thread

I know Clattenberg and Twellman think it was a definite foul, but I don’t think it was a bad no call. The Timbers player clearly went up in the air without pushing off the NYCFC player, and banged into him while looking for the ball. Maybe it’s me being a biased fan in the sense that I love me a dramatic goal. What an ending to regulation

The one can notably made contact, but I think I saw at least 3. Throwing objects at players should be a lifetime ban IMO.

Totally agree on the banning but hard to enforce.

So many cameras in stadiums these days it’s been relatively easy for offenders to get nabbed

Maybe it was just two.

Real Salt Lake makes the youngest signing in MLS history. Axel Kei just turned 14.

Last year, he debuted with the MLS Next Pro team Real Monarchs at just 13 years old, which made him the youngest professional athlete to feature for an American sports team.

Bobby Orr started playing for the Oshawa Generals at age 14 and hockey is a tougher sport than soccer to play against older, bigger guys (although Orr ended his NHL career relatively young.) Hope Axel avoids injury and has a long, successful soccer career.

Pretty crazy month for MLS in terms of transfers.

Per Tom Bogert’s report:
-Pepi to Augsburg ($20m)
-Dike to West Brom ($8.5M)
-Paredes to Wolfsburg ($7m~ pending medical)
-Buchanan to Brugge ($7m)
-Atuesta to Palmeiras ($4m + $3.5m add-ons)

Matt Turner to Arsenal on the verge of completion as well

Always have mixed feeling about these exports. It is a great opportunity for the individuals concerned but I wish North America soccer was sufficiently popular that MLS clubs could afford to keep more of them.

I didn’t see Buchanan on the current Canadian team roster but he will be needed this coming week!

Except for the top 10 global clubs (rough #), if your club has good young talent it is a selling club in one way or another IMO. Many quality clubs in EPL, La Liga, and the Bundesliga wind up selling their top talent to the super clubs. I think it’s a good thing in the long run for the league when players get moved for better opportunities. It’s way better than being viewed as a probable retirement home.

My regret is not being able to see these young talents play “in the flesh” in their prime.

A good example was Alphonso Davies who left Vancouver for Bayern when he was only 17. Best hope to see him live is if Vancouver is one of the Canadian cities chosen for 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Yeah, they should MAKE them play here at lower wages!! THAT’s the American way! Or, kick them off the National team if they don’t play domestically. That’s the American Women’s way!

On the plus side, The MLS is poaching from Central and South America. Those players want the exposure to Euro scouts who won’t go to their countries.

Yeah, fans of some South American teams are annoyed about some of the sales to MLS. It is fun to me that MLS is viewed as a potential pathway to Europe for them now.

Americans and Canadians are a bit spoiled in sports such as baseball, football, basketball and hockey in that we do get to see the best players in the world play here. Just saying that it is too bad that soccer hasn’t gained anywhere near the support that these other sports have in Canada and US. It would be great if MLS could commercially compete with the main European leagues and put a better product on the field; rather than being a feeder to the European leagues and a place for their “past their prime” players to finish out their careers!

American’s like their Sports action in spurts, and they need to be prompted to when scores might occur. Continuous action is just not easy enough to follow along.
I don’t think this is ever going to change, 'cuz 'merica.

Twellman says terms have been agreed to now

Banner transfer window for young MLS players (plus Turner) moving to Europe this winter. And it seems like a lot of the teams are investing that money in young South American players.

Yedlin retiring to Miami.

ESPN reporting details: Turner’s transfer is $6 million up front, and could be as much as $10m with add-ons. The Revs also get 10% sell-on percentage if Turner moves from Arsenal. Per the ubiquitous " source with knowledge of discussions"
