The MLS Soccer Thread

Meanwhile, SDFC, top team in the MLS Soccer League West, lose to 8th place (Clausura) / 16th place (Apertura) Pachuca. At home (2/3 full).
Pachuca, after 3 matches, are on top of the current LigaMX league, though.

USMNT’s Matt Turner gets a forced retirement:

SEA beat CONCACAF Champions Cruz Azul 0-7.
SEA was “away” even though playing in SEA.

SEA at the top with that GD.

After one round, wow, The MLS showed up! In the Three-Points-Must System (NHL really needs this): Eight wins (3 pts), two OT wins (2 pts), three OT losses (1 pt), and five losses (0 pts). 31 points vs LigaMX’s 23 points.
Do note this is only the top 18 MLS teams (minus VAN, plus SDFC) based on last year’s standings.

LAFC get Son, so sources say.

Large Korean community here (large every community here, though), so expect tix to get a little more expensive for the rest of the season.
LAFC currently 13th in Leagues Cup so not jumping every team (though it is a lot more possible with none of the MLS teams playing each other.

It’s official. Another title for Muller this year?

Atlanta is destroying Atlas so far tonight. Did not see that coming.

I have been a fan of Muller for a long time. However, he is long in the tooth for his position. Hope it works out.

Meanwhile LA fans are now really excited about the World Cup, but probably for reasons you didn’t think of:

Whitecaps have a lot of speed on the team already so they don’t need Müller for that reason. I hope his experience and other skills will be helpful. I will be overseas until September so won’t see him play until then. Hoping LAFC plays Vancouver in the playoffs as I would love to see both Son and Müller.

Any real source?

I expect we will see similar faux pas from many politicians!

It’s a recorded appearance by a public official. You can google it yourself to find your approved news sources.

I could. But that means we’d all have to. Instead, ONE person could post a credible news source, save everyone a lot of time.
I’m not even allowed to look at bluesky from work.

I’ll do it for everyone… like always.

https://athlonsports.com/soccer/fans-slam-la-councilwomans-mistake-during-son-heung-mins-lafc-presentation-so-embarrassing

But the councilwoman’s mistake ended up being the headline and highlight. For many, it wasn’t just a mistake but symbolic of a broader disconnect between American politics and global football culture.

OK, or “one chick doesn’t know anything about soccer, yet spoke as if she did.”
The assumption that she was THE voice of America, cuz she is one American, is stupid, and anyone who thinks that is also stupid.

Back to Leagues Cup…
LAG, Last in the West, are 2 GDs behind POR (3 behind ORL) and need to win by two goals to advance.
FC Cin or NYRB (behind POR by 4 GDs) can advance by winning by 4 goals and LAG not winning by two or more goals.
A bunch of less likely scenarios could happen to put FC-Cin or NYRB in the knockouts.

On the other side of the border (though playing in the USA), Juarez needs:

  1. To win to end up on top;
  2. Win on penalties to come in second; or
  3. Lose on Penalties to pass Puebla in fourth.

Too bad none of these teams are playing each other tonight.

After tonight, there will be a 12-day break for teams to go back to their own leagues, play a few matches.

Watching LAG-SAN from Thursday.
SAN down two men, but score bug shows only one red card. Sloppy.
LAG advance, would help to get to third, so have a chance in CONCACAF CC next year. Cuz playoff aspirations in The MLS pretty shy. So, need to win two matches in Knockouts.

Interesting read on the We’re Not The Retirement League:

I like this:

Despite MLS publicly claiming it doesn’t want to be a final port of call for fading European stars, the league continues to open its arms to those same fading European stars before retirement.

Clubs have their own goals that differ from MLS execs.

I think this is the most important attraction for older stars:

An average of about 60% of the minutes and 0.66 non-penalty goals+assists in their first full season in the league is not a bad return. About only 15 players in the league right now are hitting both of those thresholds. And missing nearly 40% of the minutes isn’t as penalizing as it is in the Premier League, where every game counts toward your final point total, because of MLS’s very forgiving playoff system.

They don’t have to play every minute of the season. Take a couple games off. Skip the artificial turf (poor Muller) and long road trips. Save your legs for the playoffs and maybe National call-ups.

Geriatric soccer league

Then there are those that cannot handle what it takes to be greater, settle for “close to home.”

Well, this other tournament has started up again. Watch SEA beat the 17th-place (of 18) LigaMX team on penalties. At home.

MLS sweep the quarters. On its way to being … 14th best league in the world, still behind Liga MX (11th)!
