The Daylight Savings Thread

Yeah, can’t do much about that. You could make it straiter though.

One of the advantages of having been WFH for over a decade, functioning in primarily an “individual contributor” role, and not having kids is that my work day starts about 2 hours after local sunrise, and runs until I get to a stopping point 8-10 hours later.

I personally don’t care much about what shows on the clock, aside from it being a way to coordinate things that must happen at times-certain, like meetings or medical appointments.

And move the damn deer crossings for crying out loud!

I am certainly less in tune than you with morning sun while I am sleeping. I am quite in tune with nighttime sun though, and find it near impossible to fall asleep while it is still broad daylight. Which it is here in summer when I ought to be getting to bed. Which I hate. Granted, we could solve that problem by simply changing time zones.

Too much morning sun is not a problem. Too much nighttime sun is though. So I’d rather have full year standard time, or switch time zones and have year-round DST (which is two ways of saying the same thing).

Yeah, I’d kind of rather just adopt GMT / Zulu time across the whole world.

China seems to have had success with their single-time zone model. At least AFAIK. I’m admittedly not an expert on China. But that’s kind of the same idea just on a slightly smaller (but still pretty significant) scale than the entire world.

One problem is that Santa Claus would have a harder time getting to everyone’s homes on Christmas Eve, but I think he’d figure out a way.

That’s true.

Sunlight makes me sleepy. I never have trouble falling asleep during the day, and road trips during daylight are rough. Meanwhile I can stay up all night and often have trouble falling asleep at night even after struggling to stay awake all day.

Yes, I do suspect I have narcolepsy.

I thought this after I started drinking coffee regularly.

It took an embarrassingly long time for me to figure out that I slept much better on days I didn’t have a grande latte at 2:30 PM than on the days that I did.

Still, I have to take something (melatonin or an actual med) most nights to sleep. So I dunno, I guess that’s probably bad.

And that’s with a fairly strict “no coffee or soda after noon” rule… which does help a lot. I’m sure I’d sleep better still without ANY coffee, but I function better with it, so…

Or you’re a mutated vampire.

You must go to bed a lot earlier than i do. The only place I’ve ever had an issue with night time sun is Scandinavia, near the solstice.

Or I live further west in my time zone than you do.

As a rather extreme example, the latest nautical twilight in Marquette, MI is 11:19 PM, which is certainly later than I aim to be asleep (although I sometimes miss.) And while Marquette is one of the worst, there are other UP cities even further west with even later twilights.

Now I am not as bad off as Marquette, but I would certainly prefer to be in a different time zone.

Well, both are true. I almost never go to bed before 11:30, but i also live towards the east of my time zone.

I also just like to have some nighttime before bed. It helps me wind down. I don’t want to go to bed the instant it gets dark. I kind of like summer nights. It’s cool enough to go for a walk and enjoy being outside.

They just start WAAAAAAYYYYY too late.
