Thanksgiving 2020 Discussion Thread

2 pm has always been my family’s holiday meal time, so I find it interesting that this is early to others. We eat and then spend hours playing games, with breaks for dessert once the meal settles.

I prefer it. Family gatherings are usually scheduled for 4, and dinner may not start until 5 or 6, no matter how much we push it up.
This year, our parents will leave around 4 or 5, and there will be only sons and their girlfriends left, so games might happen.

We aren’t planning for a specific time, since it’s just us. Probably will end up eating at the usual dinner time, six or so. Will cook the turkey, once it’s almost done will whip up the boxed and canned foods, and pop the pies in the oven after the turkey comes out.

I always preferred to eat later, because I make the turkey. Ours is also the best turkey in the family, so it was always requested. Years where dinner was scheduled for two, I’d be up at 5:30 getting the house ready so I’d still have time to make the bird. And I’d be asleep by seven. Very stressful.

Our 2 guests are not meat eaters so Mrs. Fleeble got a vegetarian “turkey” and a seabass for our protein. Also my boss sent me some assorted jams as a holiday gift so going to have those with bread. Still a good chance that weather will not permit us to eat outdoors anyway so it could just be that we do this all over Zoom, and perhaps just drop off some food at their house so that we can feel like we’re “hosting.”

We got all the xmas decor up :grimacing:

It’s raining here. I don’t know how many people planned to eat outdoors in my neck of the woods, but i don’t think it’s happening.

we are opening windows. just improving airflow helps a lot. Crack them an inch or two

will be around 60 degrees here, and oven will be working

Yup, last I checked inside dining is allowed here, so why are they shaming people for gathering in homes on thanksgiving? Seems hypocritical.

Yeah, it seems dumb to leave restaurants open. Ours are still open, too.

Weather was good last Thursday, had a nice time with our friends, then did a zoom call with some relatives.

Usual Thanksgiving when it’s not with family. Kids decided what the meal was (this year was meatballs, noodles and garlic bread), we talked about what we were thankful for and what we wanted to happen in the next year.

Quick call to family, watched the Lions get mauled and the Cowboys get scalped. And then I went and spent $25K on a new vehicle on Friday after swearing that $129 for a new Fitbit on Wednesday was all I was going to spend on myself during the holiday season.

My family had small gathering for thanksgiving (`~10), but the oldest generation did not join.1 man in his 60s with copd did join, but pretty much said ‘hi’, then ‘bye’ in 10 min.

in-laws canceled. I feel so bad for them. They are 100% terrified to leave house. They have quarantined almost the entire year.

Group of young friends had a small dinner few days later. Oldest there was 40.

In my extended family, 8 people have gotten covid this year. 2 households, with 4 people in each. No serious complications as everyone was fairly young and healthy.

In the nursing home my 90 yr old grandmother lives, she knows at least 1 friend that died and another currently in hospital. Nursing home pretty much a jail right now. Kills me to think some people will die alone this year.

Wow. Outside of people on this forum, I don’t know anybody that’s had covid, and I don’t think I know anybody that knows anybody that has covid. Actually, not quite correct. My son in law was exposed to someone with covid at work, but he tested negative. That’s about as close as it’s gotten around here. But it’s growing, a local pharmacist says it’s absolutely out there in the small town we live in.

We’ll stay shuttered (no gatherings outside of our kids and their SO’s) until a vaccine is readily available. Lets hope that’s soon because I’m getting weary of this year that wasn’t.

OK, since I started the thread, I’ll review ours: our T-Day came out alright. Nine people, spread across the back yard. Was a bit cool and a bit windy, but the sun was out.
Made a turkey, which looked pretty small compared with the huge ham plate the in-laws brought, but still had plenty of leftovers. So, wife made Turkey Divan last night with the leftovers.
Made 6 pounds of mashed potatoes (half russet, half Yukon gold), still have some left. Brussels Sprouts, yams, dressing.
Still eating the homemade ice cream (vanilla cinnamon), which I think broke the maker. About 15 minutes in, the maker stopped. It was done, but this is the first time it has stopped because the ice cream was so thick (I used 4 cups of heavy cream and 3 cups whole milk (so I didn’t have to buy half-and-half) for 22% fat mixture, perhaps that’s why). It still ran after I took out the ice cream, so maybe it’s not totaled. I might have overfilled at the beginning. Says to keep two inches clear at the top, and I might have had only 1" or maybe 0.5" clearance. Will cut back the heavy cream next time so that it is both less fattening and not as much mixture.

Not to say my Thanksgiving wasn’t good (it was), I wouldn’t mind an off-season invite to this

I’ll put you on the wait list.

I know of at least 20. Of those a few were really sick at home, a few hospitalizations, two on ventilators. One death directly from COVID, plus one friend who died of a heart attack less than a week after being let out of the hospital for COVID.

That’s probably because you live in Canada, where numbers have been lower than here in the states. I have relatives in the NYC area. Two died of covid, two had diagnosed covid (one was very sick), two more probably had covid but tests weren’t available then unless you could prove a link to a known case. Plus, lots of friends, friends/relatives of friends, people I went to college with… I haven’t kept count, and it would be way too depressing to try.
