Supreme court overturns Roe v. Wade

Yeah, the President in 1853 was a Democrat who supported slavery. How the parties have changed over time.

Old article (March 2023)
Not sure why it is trending again (saw it in my feed too)

Oldness of the article does not change the horribleness of the situation in red states.

I think either @Lucy or I can do this . . . I won’t have time until Wednesday, though.

Loop it back around to Roe v Wade!

Given recent statements by the Pope* indicating that he might endorse blessings of same-sex unions (not marriage) and allow female priests, do we think we could see a walkback of Catholic bans on abortion in some cases?

Ten years ago I would have said absolutely not. I also wouldn’t have predicted a softening on the LGBTQ position… nor typed out Q at the end of that.

*I assume, but don’t know, this was NOT under papal infallibility, rather “things the Pope mused about”

Done. And good idea.

Just fyi, I happened to be involved in this thread, so I noticed the comments, but in general it’s good to use the report function (type of report: other) to suggest moving a block of posts – it’s much more prominent to the mods that way.

US infant mortality rates rise.

"But, but, they were already born, right?
“OK, so not my problem anymore. I only have jurisdiction when the baby is inside the mother. Heck, this isn’t even murder. God has a plan for those children, and I cannot challenge the will of God. Thoughts and prayers, etc.”

I wonder if some cluster analysis has been done between infant mortality and groups of anti-vax communities.

So many possibilities here. But my first thought was if later abortions being more difficult in some places it might mean that babies with fatal medical conditions are now being kept/carried rather than aborted.

I think most late term abortions are babies that weren’t expected to live, so forcing those pregnancies to continue would mean this is an expected result, no?

Yes. It’s a feature.

Oh, didn’t even think about that. I wonder if abortion restrictions or unvaccination causes more infant mortality. Several TX counties just illegally made it illegal to leave the county for abortion. If enforced, that would be acutely deadly and I’d say it’s almost surely the greater cause. Thankfully it seems legal experts agree that it’ll never stand when somebody’s actually prosecuted.

Regardless, it may be having the intended effect if women are scared to disobey the law, as they’d still have to go through being arrested and challenging the law, etc.

Not just that, it is illegal to drive through the county if you are traveling to get an abortion.

How is that even constitutionally legal?

Because the Bible says so.
