Because it’s an election, they want to win, and think that supporting something popular will help with that. Although Cuomo wants to roll back some rules that his big donors who invest in real estate dislike.

Half a dozen (or more, I’ve lost count) have come forward with statements about being sexually harassed by Cuomo. He has been endorsed by famous sexual harasser Bill Clinton. Result? He’s leading among women in polling. Make it make sense.

First you have to define what rent control actually means in practice.
The main issue in NYC IIRC has always been the weird % the brokers charge you for a rental (its a ludicrous transaction cost that should really not exist).
They lost in court a while back but I think they are still fighting about getting it tacked on again
For the guy on the street:
“rent control” → “the amount I’m charged for rent can’t increase (no matter what) and that it’s not up to the landlord how much profit they’re going to make off of my money”
