Signal snafu

Based on the timing, it’s possible he was actually in the Kremlin when added to the chat

On the left: Hegseth’s message.

On the right: the applicable CENTCOM classification guide provisions.

As you’d expect, clearly classified

You can’t be certain that the mode of communication is secure.

Thats the problem. Its completely possible (and has been done before) to hack into their phones and read their messages.

This is the primary reason why the US uses STU phones to communicate long-distance (one unit at each end). Those phones have military grade encryption so its not possible to crack the encrypted conversation very quickly.

They definitely didn’t do this for security reasons or ease of use. Its always been about the messages auto-deleting.

I wonder if they are hoping that Fox News will just report the denial and people who want to believe it will, or if they were hoping the reporter wouldn’t publish the full text. Or maybe just incompetence, could be that simple.

John Bolton on NPR yesterday described a couple of secure ways that they could have done this chat. I think he would know.

This admin’s security seems to be on par with the guys from Space Balls.

They simply don’t care. We are in a post truth reality. Truth or falsehoods do not matter, only what they say matters. Power > Rule of Law, What I say > Facts.

  • Breaking the law and getting away with it is powerful.
  • Breaking the law and doing things you have punished underlings for is powerful.
  • Not creating a trail of past actions/statements means you have no accountability to your past actions.
  • The right wing propaganda machine (so much more than just Fox news now) will protect them with their core constituents.
  • The first rule of Power, never, ever accept fault or wrongdoing.

Trump is a master of this behavior. Watching these villains you can see they are not as good as Trump. Hegseth gets emotional and goes on the attack, indicating he feels threatened which is a sign of weakness. Gabbard gets the deer in the headlights look, a sign of weakness.

The Republicans will just repeat the mantra that nothing bad happened as a result of the security breach and we should just focus on the success of the mission instead.

Doesn’t need to be exclusive events. Below is Fox News reporting on the military Signal text thread.

It doesn’t matter if the reporter published the full text. The Trump admin says no classified materials, so there was none. Vance correctly called out Europe for being freeloaders and they’re too afraid to say anything about it. Democrats are whining about a nothingburger. The reporter is a Democrat and a liar.

I don’t know that it’s so much “breaking the law is powerful” as much as they have power and simply don’t care to think about the law.

Witcoff says he didn’t reply to the Signal chat while he was in Moscow because he didn’t bring his personal devices with him. That’s good, but also an admission that he does use Signal on personal devices for these chats

So he only uses his personal phone for military operation chats on Signal while not in Russia?

Great defense, Witkoff!

People are drawing some interesting conclusions from the attack details posted that have some national security implications

“It’s not carriers, folks: those launched the F-18s and they took 90 minutes to reach target. And 100 miles from Sanaa in every direction is land. This means that either MQ-9s were loitering in Yemeni airspace, or very close just over the Saudi border, or there’s a base in southwestern Saudi”

A thread on it here if you are on Bluesky:

Those Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility SCIF are at their offices and homes. They include secure communication devices for this exact type of situation so they can be in contact. Most of them also can have a SCIF made for them if they are going to be away from their normal places. Regular cell phones are prohibited from begin introduced into a SCIF.

Also often times in the SCIF they will use secure phones or computers connected securely for video chat. Anything they write down (type) becomes a record that will usually have to be archived, though it may or may not be FOIA’d.

90 minutes is like 1000 miles at Mach 1.

total nothingburger

all they gotta say is no classified info was texted and if a reporter publishes the text it’s just fake news. The left makes this sh!t up to make the administration look bad because they hate them.

also, they published the “text” after the attack and after the details of the attack were known. Because they didn’t know the details before the attack because it was classified yo

Reminds me of this:

Ted Striker:
My orders came through. My squadron ships out tomorrow. We’re bombing the storage depots at Daiquiri at 1800 hours. We’re coming in from the north, below their radar.

Elaine Dickinson:
When will you be back?

Ted Striker:
I can’t tell you that. It’s classified.

I just stumbled upon this: images on imgur of tweets about why using Signal wasn’t a mistake, but was very much on purpose, in accordance with project 2025.
