A lot of people hate running because they run too hard. If you walk in zone 2 until you can run in zone 2 it’ll feel a lot better.
I recommend padded bike shorts
They keep my taint from going numb in the saddle
Big padded bike seats paradoxically aren’t nearly as comfortable because of the rubbing and larger surface area
I agree. You can actually run slower than walking pace. It won’t raise your HR much but it will get your muscles and joints used to the motion of running. As a middle-aged person, if I do a walking pace run for 20 minutes or so after a few weeks off, I will feel quite stiff the next day.
i ran 10 miles today. beautiful day and figured why not? well, i don’t need that distance. on the plus side, i was pretty busy this month with 27 runs and 143 miles. (targets are 24 and 100) had been riding exercise bike Jan-Mar but some basement remodel/foundation work led to everything (incl the bike) being moved to one corner. so i only got 10 days of riding (instead of the 24 i had hoped for).
anyway, yay i guess. I was pretty tired the last few today. but i got that out of my system (ran to a landmark that I used to use as the destination on “long(ish) runs” in my younger days. but…meh
i think tomorrow is also new shoe day.
I mostly agree. Sometimes running hard to achieve a milestone can be fun, but running hard all the time, every time, kinda sucks. I was in that mindset when I thought of exercise more generally as something that was work, and the sooner I could complete the work, the better.
Changing the mindset a bit…I find walking more enjoyable. Why? I can get out to a nice park and take in nature. But, I can also run, jog, or do any combination of that when I forget about a time/distance goal, and keep the pace in a more enjoyable and sustainable range.
I think I like some aspect of getting up the heart rate from running, and then coming down from that. The motion of running vs walking? Is the added impact a benefit?
Finished week one, day two. 1.86 miles in 30 minutes (8 minutes running, 12 minutes walking on top of the 5 minutes each of warm up and cool down). Did 1.82 miles on Monday, so very slight improvement.
I live at the bottom of an incline. It’s about a quarter mile of slight incline, then a third mile of moderate incline, and then a quarter mile of steep incline. So the first half of my workout is slow and painful. Then there is a steep decline into a ravine and a slight decline through the whole ravine, which is about 3/4 mile. So halfway through it I feel much worse than toward the end. But at least I have more stamina to get through the pain.
Did your neighborhood get hit by asteroids?
She lives in a van down by the river!!
My husband came along tonight. We got caught in the rain. No pina coladas, though.
We were chatting through the jogging, so I went a little slower than last time, 1.83 miles in 30 minutes. He wasn’t even winded.
I ran with my spouse once. Once.
She runs all annoying and stuff.
I went running with my spouse once. It was to get across the road before the walk signal went red. She walked the last few steps.
Went out early today, was thinking I would just take a walk, maybe jog a bit. Once I got going, I felt pretty good…so maybe 3 miles and walk back. Mile 1 was nearly 11 minutes as I was navigating some muddy spots in the trail, but miles 2-3 were both around 9:30. Ended up running the 3 miles back, maintaining that pace.
Looking at my heart rate, I was around 155-165 miles 2-5 and then that crept up to 170 for the last couple minutes. I maintained a fairly constant pace the entire time on a level trail, maybe a bit of adrenaline kicked in at the end, or I was just running out of steam.
Last time I ran 6 miles was back in December, this was 4 minutes faster and I’m about 15 pounds lighter. That last one was a lot harder. Legs are tired, but I feel good otherwise.
2.04 miles in 31 minutes today; 9 running and 22 walking, which is a 3.95 mi/hr pace. Obviously not great, and running 90 seconds at a time instead of 60 definitely felt way more difficult than I thought it would based on yesterday’s run. But I survived.
Was planning on running about 7 miles today but had to cut it short. Got to about mile 4 and all of a sudden was desperate to find a bathroom. Managed to amble home in the nick of time but only ended up at 5 miles, with that last one a real awkward clencher.
been there. Back in the day, i learned to tuck a small wad of TP inside a pocket so that I could duck down in a culvert or behind a tree if needed. Did take advantage of that maybe 20% of the time when it was likely.
Now I have better pre-run evacuation rituals, so the same kind of “emergency” hasn’t … emerged … in a while.
Also, managed to multi-task this morning. It was raining when I started out, and, as my father said, when you run in the rain you get 3 things done:
- You get your exercise,
- You take a shower, and
- You wash your clothes
all at the same time!
I ran in the rain too yesterday. Rain this time of year in our area is not too common, and some folks seemed confused…one woman I saw was running with an umbrella. My first time seeing that one.
She may have only achieved #1 on your list.
That’s a tough place to stop - the closest thing to a tree was a road sign. That being said, you see that in India all the time, so that wouldn’t be a problem in the Tour of India.
