Everyone worries about time. I dont. Im happy if i can run a long distance, i never run fast. My best half marathon time i broke 3 hours lol.
I agree that the ability to run a half marathon is much more important to middle-aged me than being able to run a fast 5K. However, you do come up against time limits. Pikes Peak Ascent entry requires a half-marathon time of 150 minutes or less. Not a problem in my 30s (I would aim for 90 minutes) but now in my mid-50s I have to train quite a bit to get that time.
Edit: Theyâve changed Pikes Peak Ascent entry to be a bit easier - 10 miles in 130 minutes. Thatâs about 170 minutes for a half marathon.
Weight seems like such a huge driver of time. I only have three runs that i tracked on my app in the last three months (i had high hopes of more running back in December) but dropped about a minute per mile with no training and mostly just weight loss. For me, 5 pounds has pretty consistently turned into 0:15 per mile faster. I saw the same thing twice before while losing about 15-20 pounds, but both of those previous times i was running 3x a week for 2-3 miles. This time itâs all been walking off the weight.
I clicked off a mile at 8:56 after work yesterday, was really surprised at the time. I was running hard but nothing that felt crazy⌠then went for another after 15 seconds of walking⌠came in at 8:59 including the break. Felt pretty good.
I know all about cutoff times. Before I figured out food and drink, I was dead last. Iâve had them waiting for me to pass so they can pull the signs. I finished a âribsâ race and all the food was gone lol. Now Iâm happy if Iâm in the tail end. Iâm XL even when Iâm fit, Iâll never be fast. I donât race, I choose runs and bike rides that are challenging, then my goal is to train to finish it. Thatâs plenty for me.
Different goals for different people. Nothing wrong with that.
A perfect lead in to the article from âThe Rundownâ that hit my e-mail today. (No idea why Iâm getting those e-mailed to me)
Either thereâs a typo there, or the club goals are a little different than I would expect.
Well, the âbâ and ânâ are right next to each other on the keyboard, and autocorrect will not automatically correct a legitimate word into the legitimate word it should be.
Also, meeting at 6AM usually means that the person was not out on a date late the night before. Positive selection going on right there, though could be negative selection on other aspects.
Could get quite romantic rubbing alongside each other.

Lap 1: 4m40s
Lap 2: 4m47s
Sprint 1: 13.82s
Sprint 1: 15.02s, but I think I stopped my watch late
Sprint 1: 13.93s, but I think I stopped my watch early.
Oh, and at the end of that last sprint, I pulled a calf muscle. Had to limp home another half-mile.
Gonna roller it and massage-gun it, unless anyone has more experience with this. Ice or heat, etc.?
I dug out my dust-covered running shoes this week. Theyâre old, but definitely have less than 300 miles on them. Iâve gone out a couple of times, running a flat trail and alternating walking and running (really a very slow jog) every 5 minutes, covering 3-4 miles. The good news is that I wasnât dying at the 5 minute mark, and my calf and knee havenât bothered me. I normally use the elliptical at the gym, increasing the resistance rather than pace, which I hope has built up some muscle in my calf. Even 6 months ago, my calf would hurt if I stood on my tip toes.
My current plan is to walk the uphill part of the 5K and to try running at least half of the flat or downhill sections. I fly out that same night with my other son, so I donât want to do anything stupid that will affect my vacation.
Hopefully itâs just a strain, rather than a tear. I found a calf compression sleeve really helpful when I tore mine.
Iâm due for new shoes. For some strange reason, I hate the process of buying new shoes. I find a pair I like, next time I need new shoes theyâre replaced with some new version so I have to research all over again. And I need wide, heavy support shoes. Maybe I should just buy a pair of boots lol.
Thanks. It doesnât appear to be swelling, though my calves are naturally large (thanks. Mom and Dad!). I cannot feel any growth.
I think so. It doesnât hurt to walk today as much as it did yesterday. Tylenol and giant roller thing. My son has a massage gun, but I couldnât find it.
then you are in the same boat asâŚevery runner. it sucks buying them bc of the model changes and slight differences. at least for those w fâd up feet/gait/needs
Ah, I thought it was just me. I need heavy cushioning and support + wide, so most shoes donât even start fitting right.
You may want to consider buying an extra pair or two to be safe. Put them aside somewhere you are likely to find again though.
I did another zone 2 run today and managed to keep my HR in the 130s for most of it. It was at 12:30/mi which was 1 whole minute faster per mile than when I ran at this HR 3 weeks ago. Hopefully it wasnât just part of random fluctuations and that the Z2 thing is working.
fuckinâ A, man! Way to go!
Noice! Good job on getting after it. If I can make a recommendation, donât get so precise down to the hundredths of seconds. None of us are that well-tuned on starting or stopping our watches that it would make a difference. Maybe keep it rounded to the nearest 0.1, for good measure.
