The Population Bomb was required reading in college. One of the most famous statistical frauds.
How was it statistical fraud? I couldnât find anything about fraud. More a case of jumping to the wrong conclusions by not using all the data available to them (he and his wife) at the time. Apparently both the advances of the Green revolution and the tendency of countries to lower their birthrate once they became wealthier, were quite well-known by 1968.
Certainly some of the suggestions sound like eugenics today, like starving to death (by withholding food aid) countries that couldnât get their birth rate down and putting stuff in the drinking water to cause temporary sterilization.
To get high initial sales of the book, their timing was great -
For the 14 years prior the bookâs appearance, the world population had been growing at accelerating rates, but immediately after the bookâs publication, the world population growth rate coincidentally began a continuing downward trend, from its 1968 peak of 2.09% to 1.09% in 2018.
But this also meant that the book aged terribly and why so few of us have heard of it today.
Interesting, that in the actuarial world, it would be hard to go against a trend that had been evident for the previous 14 years.
She navigated segregation to become an esteemed mathematician â and today, her work helps billions of people navigate the world.
Gladys West, whose pioneering career contributed key elements to what became the GPS satellite system and was later acknowledged as a âhidden figureâ of GPS, died Saturday at age 95.
