RIP thread

Grew up watching Dawson’s Creek.

Also Varsity Blues. Loved that film.

I saw Varsity Blues once. Well after the initial release. He was solid. Never saw Dawson’s Creek…probably a time-in-life thing.

I really liked Rules of Attraction.

Sad. RIP

Saw that he had to sell memorabilia to help pay for his treatment. Sad.

Also family started a go fund me as they were tapped

Wow dude with an estimated $8M net worth needs a go fund me? He made $175K per episode on Dawsons creek. Either he made some extremely poor financial choices or the US health system is even more screwed up than I thought or maybe both.

I mean cancer sucks and no one should go bankrupt seeking medical treatment, but I just don’t understand the whole celebrity go fund me things. If you’re not famous you don’t get a $1M for having cancer?

I am a bit conflicted on this one.

Effectively, the only way out for the family given that they ran down all funds for his medical care would be to sell their family home (which is substantial) and downsize to something a lot smaller. He was the main earner and she was a SAHM.

My first thought was: why did they not have life insurance (given that they had 6 kids and he was the main provider)?

So could also be poor financial planning on their part as well.

How much of that “net worth” is liquid? Or liquid enough to pay bills today?

How much of that $8M is realized if you do liquidate it all today?

Would he be underwritten if the cancer was already known when such a decision needed to be contemplated?

I imagine that the $8M “net worth” is at risk of being depleted with the medical costs placing liens on it already in settling van der Beek’s estate.

Definitely not if he tried to do it when he had cancer.

But his kids are not all super young. And given that his wife was SAHM the financial risk there for the family was pretty clear. Term life insurance at a minimum (when kids were born) would have been the standard advice (and I assume he did have some advisors).

One source has it at a much lower value . . .
James Van Der Beek’s Net Worth at the Time of His Death

Oldest is about 16 . . . youngest was born in 2021. The older 4 kids are about 2 years apart; the two younger kids are about 3 years apart.

Some are still pretty young.

Well I’m not going to be part of bailing out these rich celebrities who didn’t plan well, but if other people want to, there’s definitely worse things you could be doing with your money.

Lets see, he made 175k per season in later episodes, but less earlier on. After taxes, agent fees, etc, maybe half that if he is lucky? If he nets 75k average for the 128 episodes, thats around 10M total.

That’s a lot of money, but also not too surprising that a big chunk of it would have disappeared living a hollywood lifestyle 20 years ago. If he gets out of there with 5M, and sets a 4% annual withdrawal, he’s pulling out 200k…actuary money, without the 40-50 hours a week.

Looks like he bought his house for $4.8M about one month before he passed away.

So its looking like they spent a big chunk of money on the property while their medical bills were draining them.

This does make the gofund me appear a bit more hypocritical in my view.

Robert Duvall. On the road so I can get an obituary easily.

So many memorable roles in great movies.

But how many people here knew he played Boo Radley in To Kill A Mockingbird?

RIP Robert Duvall.
