I am wondering if this is something I can tease my Haitian SiL about or it is actually offensive.
He has a sense of humor, but lacks a sense of sarcasm.
I would tread lightly on such a topic, if it were me. I would regard it similarly (perhaps not quite so bad but not far different) to making a joke about how Muslims were being beaten up in the aftermath of 9/11. I haven’t heard a story about the migrants being attacked yet, but I’d be pleasantly surprised to not hear one soon. Either way, this national concentration by the GOP of racism toward a specific, vulnerable group in a specific area makes me very uncomfortable.

Haiti, he’s specifically said the country is a shithole (2018) and that Haitians “all have AIDS” (2017.) Regardless, Black people support Trump because he’s been convicted of a crime so they see Trump as being the same as them (2024).
