After posting mine, see knoath blurred same frustration, fortunately, mine went a little faster.

I bailed at 43. I, too, didn’t think to check history. I saw the 10th century and thought I knew nothing that happened in the10th century, so just quit.

Oh, I went the other way. History was literally my first guess. I wasn’t convinced it was a country, but I did try damn near every other country in Europe. I’d try a country or two, then move one, come back and try another country or empire. Jeez.

I got novel and film, that let me piece together ‘coming-of-age.’ Knew it was a woman, three letter middle name, yes. Glad it worked, I don’t have a long list of coming-of-age books in my brain.

I suspected it was a fictional name, given it was in italics. Guessed “he” very early and got lots of hits (but tellingly, none in the first paragraph) but did not guess “she”. For a while, I was trying to think of male characters that had had multiple movies made. Coming of age finally gave it away

Honestly, I don’t think I even knew Little Women was a coming of age story. Never read it.
But I figured it out somehow.

I got that it was a book by an American woman pretty fast. Joan Didion’s name was the first that popped into my head and Joan gave me Joan Bennett, which led to the title.

I had ‘petrol or diesel fuel,’ and was really thinking about fuels that you might use in manufacturing, or heating a home, or whatever. I even got ‘portmanteau,’ so I knew the name was a hybrid. I finally guessed ‘world’ and saw ‘world war II’ and that did it.

I had the phrase “burns longer than gasoline”. I thought I had it with diesel. I remembered that napalm burns a long time but didn’t really expect it to be the answer.

Well, I knew right away it was something very hot. I wasn’t thinking a weapon at first.

I was thinking weapon and then fire bombing in particular and getting a little worried that my guesses weren’t leading anywhere. I eventually tried Vietnam and that got me on the right path. I’d tried President to see if I could narrow the timeframe down, and I got a hit, but never guessed the mentioned President. I stopped because I thought i’d gotten too recent. I’m really glad I didn’t guess Obama because then I’d have really been stuck on the wrong time period and would have never solved this.
