Rebellion in Syria

Rebels are suddenly making big gains in Syria. I think this could be an even bigger story in the next week or 2. If Assad gets removed, it’s a blow to Iran and Putin

Rebels take another big city

Supposedly Assad even reached out to Israel for help. In return he’s promising to cut ties with Iran.

Who should the US be pulling for in this conflict, the secular tyrant who is supported by Russia and Iran or the Islamists fighting a Jihad.

The USA has it’s own agents there which are not these two. I seem to remember there was friction with Turkey because the US was funding a Kurdish faction there. Turkey hates the Kurds. Turkey which was at the time a western ally then bought Russian military planes and has since moved to a more neutral position.

I found this helpful to figure out what’s going on with all the rebel armies.

Not sure who to “root” for here though. Certainly don’t want Al Qaeda v2 ruling Syria but Assad isn’t much better. Probably just ends up in perpetual conflict no matter what.

I suppose root for the rebels because of underdog

I can’t remember if it was Syria or elsewhere, but I think the US was partnering with Iran in one of these situations. On the other hand, I think the US killed a bunch of people in a Russian military who were attacking US forces there.

Per NYT, Iran is evacuating personnel from Syria.

Is there oil involved?

Asking for a friend.

Surprisingly, Syria is not a major oil producer:

IIRC Russia has a warm water port at Tartus that is important for thier nuclear subs. Russia is stretched a bit thin though RN…

Rebel forces are near both Damascus airports. Unless Assad had fled already he’s at risk of being trapped there.
