Good for your daughter!

My oldest daughter took a year off university (1997/98) and backpacked through Asia. I wish we had had an easy way to call her as she only infrequently contacted us from internet cafes. It was hard to for weeks at time without hearing from her.

I vaguely remember buying something like an AT&T calling card, that you could use to reduce the fees and not need coins or reverse charges.

We just had our daughter make collect calls.

There were hotmail accounts by 1997 but you needed a computer to access them. That meant going to an internet cafe. As you know there were no iPads nor iPhones in those days to make life easier.

Before my wife (then only my fiancĂ©e) and I went to Paris in 1999, we left a message on her mom’s answering machine that we had news about our wedding (we had picked a date) that we would tell her when we got back from Paris.

When we did an obligatory quick calling-card call from a phone booth on the Champs Elysees, to let her know that we made it over OK, that turned into a long, expensive phone call.

She was convinced that we were eloping and she didn’t care how damned expensive the phone call was, she wanted to make extremely clear that we were NOT allowed to get married where she and her friends couldn’t attend.

(We did intend our message to be a tease, but we hadn’t quite expected that reaction.)

We were young, stupid, and jetlagged.

When I log into one of my accounts, I get that one-time number texted to me that I need to enter to login. Every single time, that one-time number has the same first digit. What’s the deal with that?

That’s a standard algorithm. Message me your most used credit card number, associated expiration date, zip code and 3 or 4 digit code, and I’ll tell you what that first digit is. To be absolutely certain, include the name on the card.
