Yup, those are definitely random questions.

why is the word conversationalist, not just conversationist?

Like, why add that extra, unnecessary syllable?

Probably to avoid the confusion some might have that the ā€œ-istā€ is the conversation without making the root in the adjectival form.

It’s like the words nationalist and rationalist. It’s the noun form of somebody who is conversational. Although it does seem inconsistent with the word conservationist. English is inconsistent.

I’m an inconsistentalist.

Why does the dog poop right after I clean up all the poop in the yard?

A clean lawn to a dog is like fresh powder to a skier.

If you walk in the bathroom and the toilet hasn’t been flushed do you do #2 before you flush?

It’s probably just that it always poops all the time, so of course it does right after you clean up.

Would you travel 4.5 hours each way by yourself for a day trip? The primary goal is a 1.5 mile hike. There another appealing hike also nearby, but it’s 8 miles, which I’m less enthusiastic about doing alone. I was hoping to convince my son who likes hiking to go, but 9 hours of travel time (most of it driving but part involves a ferry) is more than he’s interested in, and staying at a hotel about halfway there tonight didn’t convince him, either.

I’d need the overnight, as there’s no way I’m getting up early enough for myself to make that work. I don’t mind the drive, though. Some thinking time, some clearing-the-mind time. But to do it for the 1.5 miles, it had better be a spectacular 1.5 miles.

Sounds like something that should be a proper weekend trip. Leave Friday. Hike 8 miles Saturday, do some other stuff. Do the 1.5 Sunday before heading back.

Plot twist:

Son asked what time we’re leaving about 15 minutes before I’d planned to leave. We missed the ferry I was hoping to catch, so we’re in line for the next. He agreed that the 8-9 mile hike is pushing it, so we’ll do the short hike and check out part of the nearby national park.

The 1.5 mile hike is the far point, but there’s other stuff to check out more proximal. I think tossing out thst there were some recommended gluten free options in the main town about halfway there. The last time he visited the Olympic National Park, he entered via the west side, and came home hungry (very few food options, even fewer celiac safe ones).

Cape Flattery (primary goal)

Hurricane Ridge

Hike itself? Pretty, but not worth the drive, although we did get to see whales in the distance. Spending time with my son and the trip helping him plan a future venture? Absolutely worth it. He was much more impressed with Port Angeles over Forks as a launching pad for the Olympic National Park.

Was the the 8-9 mile hike? Looks awesome.

Cape Flattery trail (top photo) was 1.5 miles, and Hurricane Hill trail (bottom photo) was 3.5 miles. The 8-9 mile hike is Shi Shi Beach on tribal land on the coast about 20 minutes south of Cape Flattery. My son says he wants to do that hike sometime (presumably preferably with his friends vs me). It could be done as a day, but it’d be similar to what we did yesterday, with an early start and getting home late (we were gone from about 6:30am-10:30pm). However, it’d be more enjoyable to stay in either Forks (a little closer to Shi Shi Beach but otherwise unappealing) or Port Angeles (about an additional half hour away but more lodging and dining options) and see another sight in the area.

Why does checking my son out for lunch and returning him before the end of recess (with no classes between) count as absence time?
