I wonder if enough MAGA folks bought coverage such that the cancellation / changes to inauguration celebrations would trigger a PCS cat designation.

(I doubt it…but as I get ready for a meeting where differences in the definition of “cat” in different countries within my company will be discussed, I can’t help but wonder.)

Republicans are small-government insofar as small government supports business.

Republicans are happy to invoke Big Brother to ban TikTok, unless TikTok will cut private American business in on the profit.

Republicans are fine with legislating your sexuality/who you can marry, your reproductive freedom, what medicines you can take, what non-medicinal drugs you can consume, who you have to pray to in school. They’re proposing massive tariffs over free trade.

When small government helps business, the GOP is small government. Pull back the environmental protections, pull back consumer protections, pull back union and other worker protections, lower the minimum age to work, keep the minimum wage low.

I think my cardiologist might be able to guess the political persuasion of his patients today.

They had the inauguration festivities playing on the TV in the waiting room.

(It’s perma-tuned to a local station, which apparently was playing the network coverage from Washington )

I was hoping Biden was going pardon Melania just for fun.

MN House of Reps is…acting chaotically.

Has 134 seats. After last election in november it was supposed to be 67/67. The parties were working on a power sharing agreement before being seated and session beginning.

Some dipshit (a dem) won his race while apparently not a resident of his district. Ruled ineligible to win and so special election scheduled for some time after session opens. While he won by a 2-1 margin, you can’t presuppose the results of the do-over. But you have a solid guess unless the party offers a bigger dipshit up.

(Ignore for a minute there was a race where someone won by 14 and the clerks acknowledge there were 20 absentee ballots that were uncounted and destroyed. sigh.)

By statute, session is gaveled in by Secretary of State and then once they see a quorum, everyone is seated and the session begins.

Republican party said with the dipshit not being eligible they had a 67/66 majority and apparently said we don’t need to power share. Dems didn’t like that and stayed away entirely.

SoS gaveled it in and saw 67 (all republicans) and said by statute that is not a quorum of the 134 member chamber and so…could not commence action.

Republicans said “screw that” and started doing the stuff. Dems stayed away.

State Supreme Court hearing arguments today on what the result should be.

It is a “when does the majority get recognized?” thing, right? The projected unseated member (dipshit) - can they be counted as real before session or after session begins.

I really don’t know. But it is collectively pretty petty on all sides IMO.

I believe it was Ben Franklin who said, “man who lives in glass house should change clothes in basement” and “ a penny saved isn’t worth much any more” and also “What goes around comes around…and what comes around goes around.”

Yes…yes, it is.

Dems are shocked (SHOCKED!) that republicans would be so petty, and once dems are back in power you’ll hear a full throated elephant whine because republicans think the dems are being unfair.

How is a quorum defined for the MN House of Reps?

by statute

a quorum is a majority of the chamber. so the question likely centers on how large is the chamber before the session officially begins.

Ah, yeah, if there are only 133 members at present then I can see the argument that 67 constitutes a quorum unless this is otherwise spelled out somewhere.

I recall something like this coming up ages ago in the Senate where they needed 2/3 to override a veto and they had 66. One of the 34 was a member of whichever political party was pushing the veto but the guy had made a campaign promise that he wouldn’t go back on. He offered to resign so that the Senate would only have 99 members and 66 would constitute 2/3, but the Senate Majority Leader said no, that wouldn’t be proper. I can’t recall what the underlying issue was. I think this was during Reagan’s presidency.

difference in the current MN example and your example is this:
your example the body is in session and membership is known. people come and go via death or resignation or whatever and the total count moves down til the replacment bumps it back up.

in MN, the session hadn’t begun. the body’s potential is 134 seats and after it commences the actual number is known (134 or lower). The SoS (who by statute commences the session and once they see a quorum…allows it to go to work) took it that the quorum was a majority of the potential number since no one had a seat in the moment.

I mean before the session begins the membership is always 0, right? So I’d think it would have to be after.

If there are 133 members and 67 present then I would say on this the SOS is wrong unless there is some bit that specifies 68 or a majority of 134 or something.

I often have a meat-egg-cheese sandwich for breakfast, on some kind of English muffin or similar.

With the surging price in eggs and relatively sticky elasticity of Jimmy Dean’s premade breakfast sandwiches, it’s $0.13 cheaper per sandwich to buy them premade and frozen than to make them from scratch. That’s without coupons, I managed to get some with coupons making them $0.49 cheaper/sandwich. I just bought 40 sandwiches and plan to buy some more, since I’m assuming several months until chicken flocks are back while inflation already happened.

Ingredients and overall nutrition are not significantly worse for being premade.

I’m considering posting this frugal tip to Facebook to piss off my in-laws.

The price of Jimmy Dean’s sandwiches varies heavily from store to store and is only worth it if you are buying a giant box. Plus you have to factor in the cost of chipotle mayo and maybe a little arugula that is required to make them edible, although you should be putting that on your homemade sandwiches too.

Does the difference in freshness/taste cover that $0.13 price difference?

MN supreme court rules that, per statute, the quorum is the majority of the seats (majority of 134 in this instance) and is not changed owing to vacancy.

i’ve been on boards where vacancy can change the quorum requirement. the statute does not get into that detail and so…

they start over again.

I have a lot of conservative MAGA, usually family both on my side and Partner’s, on my Facebook and a lot of liberal friends who I associate with by choice. I’ve taken to posting the following Bible verses in response to a lot of my more “religious” friends’ posts:

Summary

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

They don’t like it. Some of them try to argue, still. It’s interesting when a Christian actively tries to debate an ex-Christian about Christianity.

Another one to add:

Romans 12:17-19

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.

18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
