Random Political Thoughts

Not sure where to put this, but haven’t seen this discussed yet. Ohio has a ballot measure to abolish gerrymandering (or at least reduce it) by requiring an independent commission draw district lines with the goal of having state representation be similar to state wide popular vote results. But the language that appears on the ballot itself is:

  1. Repeal constitutional protections against gerrymandering approved by nearly three-quarters of Ohio electors participating in the statewide elections of 2015 and 2018, and eliminate the longstanding ability of Ohio citizens to hold their representatives accountable for establishing fair state legislative and congressional districts, Establish a new taxpayer-funded commission of appointees required to gerrymander the boundaries of state legislative and congressional districts to favor either of the two largest political parties in the state of Ohio, according to a formula based on partisan outcomes as the dominant factor, so that: A. Each district shall contain single-member districts that are geographically contiguous, but state legislative and congressional districts will no longer be required to be compact; and B. Counties, townships and cities throughout Ohio can be split and divided across multiple districts, and preserving communities of interest will be secondary to the formula that is based on partisan political outcomes.

Which sure sounds like you should vote no if you want to reduce gerrymandering instead of yes. The language was written by people opposed to the referendum.

Agreed. Reading that -

No, I don’t want to repeal protections against gerrymandering

No, I don’t want to establish required gerrymandering

Easy “no” vote for the people who want less gerrymandering, from my reading of the language. I see the issue.

Also for the “not sure where this fits” file.

We need a karma thread.

Of course, this wouldn’t really qualify unless the co sheriff was in the building at the time.

“‘They’ control the weather thread”?

Didn’t Trump control the weather that time he kept the hurricane destined for Alabama from making that sharp(ie) left turn?

Bribery attempts at work:

Honestly, this kind of shit doesn’t move the needle for anybody anymore.

Trump stood in front of the oil & gas executives and said, “Give me a billion dollars and I’ll remove a ton of regulations for you”. He’s already out in the open with quid pro quo.

In fairness, being corrupt isn’t in the top 10 worst things about Trump.

My MIL posted a negative video about “illegal aliens” on Facebook that was clearly marked as being AI-generated. When another person called her out (I don’t engage with crazy), her response was “It doesn’t matter, it’s happening everywhere and this is just an example

Meanwhile another Facebook friend is posting about how people need to stop pretending like “they” haven’t been able to control the weather with lasers since at least 2015, and how suspicious it is that a hurricane happened during hurricane season one month before an election. They posted proof - an unsourced video of somebody claiming to be a scientist discussing how it is possible to somewhat affect weather with lasers.

And another is posting that they’re voting for Trump because Democrats banned raw milk

I keep the crazies on my Facebook to a minimum, but these are people connected closely enough to me that I want to keep tabs on their mental state.

I prefer to think of it as inoculating myself against the crazy I will be exposed to when I go visit the in-laws at Christmas.

(My wife has been reducing contact with her family. That’s good for her, but unfortunately as part of that, I now have chaperone duty during her shorter/less-frequent visits.)

Well I think that one actually has some truth to it.

Are they actually raw milk aficionados though?

I don’t like raw milk. It’s not so much the Pasteurization (although that does kill flavor… ultra pasteurized is just awful) but it’s the homogenization. I don’t like lumpy milk. :woman_shrugging:

But people do. Like my dairy farming uncle and his wife & kids.

Except that there are no national laws nor FDA bans on raw milk. The Democrats aren’t “taking away” raw milk. (Some states are enacting bans but they include Republican states like West Virginia)

The one that disturbs me the most is the former grad school classmate who’s now a homeland security police(?) officer. She has a science degree, but denies climate change. She posts a decent number of anti-government and taxation memes. Today she made a post saying taxation is extortion and theft. I ended up engaging on that one as it just seemed dumb. Her salary is paid by taxes.

I saw raw milk at the grocery store last week. It was like $12 for half a gallon. No thanks.

E. coli has gotten really expensive.

I was out in the 'po today at a small town I visit regularly about 2/3 of the way to Rockford. Signage is different there. It is still mainly blue, but all the Rs have red built into the sign and every one of them has an elephant on it, except the guy running for coroner, who has a star where all other Rs have the elephant. I don’t know what the star is supposed to mean. Also, a small majority were on predominately white backgrounds, something I’ve not seen much locally. The farm signs were 100% for Trump and often included a flag. Or a bunch of flags. Inside the town itself, there were probably as many Harris signs as Trump.

Canadians react to calling a party communist differently than Americans do.

Local billionaire Chip Wilson, founder of Lululemon, is like Elon Musk politically. His sign supporting the BC Conservative Party would have hardly raised an eyebrow in the US but has been vilified here by both conservatives and liberals.
