I never know how much to blame his people for these poorly executed photo ops. Vance probably doesn’t shop for his own groceries so he has no idea of the cost of eggs let alone the variation in pricing for free-range and organic versus cheaply produced eggs. In any event he just looks stupid in this example for the reasons you mention.
I think it’s a factor of who they are able to hire. And with the quality they’ve put out thus far, probably not much talent of note is willing to put the Trump campaign on their resume.
Who wants to be known as the PR person who released the “I don’t want my face on camera” employee’s face, plus “I don’t know, whatever makes sense”? Best to jump ship to another project. Same with all these filmographers/photographers who will, say, post a picture of Vance with a newspaper showing the DJIA at an all-time high.
It’s starting to resemble scenes from Veep (maybe they thought it was a documentary).

It is a lack of talent combined with a cult of “yes sir” at play. Interview question #1: “will you ever question anything I ask you to do?”
That’s very valid. I remember reading an article that the entire campaign team was being vetted for purity. One of the first questions in their interviews was, “Do you believe the 2020 election was stolen?” or something along those lines.
I’d imagine it’s much harder to find talent when choosing to select from that pool.
