Based on the Long Covid group I’m in, I’m not sure “older people” is even fair, unless you’re counting middle aged as old. And even some younger people.

Yeah, broadly speaking, covid has few risks for the young, has a risk of long covid for the middle aged, and has a risk of death for the elderly.

I think they are more trustworthy than they used to be, but we trust them a lot less. That’s not to say that they should be trusted, but I believe they get away with less these days than they did 20-70 years ago, because of ever increasing amount of information-- studies, sources, leaks, audits, investigations. And I think this is true for every institution on your list.
I don’t know how they could become more trustworthy. And seperately, I don’t know what would make us ever trust them.
I think our distrust of institutions is mostly a symptom of divisive media. But that’s kind of just a symptom of us wanting to be divided isn’t it?
Or maybe the immediate problem is the division itself that has occurred. The way people like me don’t know any people that voted for Trump (and I’m not even particularly liberal).
I have an older family member just come back from her family in Pennsylvania. And they got to talking about the jab. And my family member was all, “yeah of course I’m boosted and also who even thinks about Covid anymore?” And they were all, “I heard that so-and-so got their shot and dropped dead 3 hours later! And so-and-so got his and died 2 hours later!” It felt less like news from home and more like news from another world.

I play bridge with a few people who voted for Trump. One who really likes Trump, and the others who just prefer having a Republican in charge.

I was surprised that one of my die hard republican friends was considering a protest vote for 3rd party this fall.
I think it’s less that people wanted to be divided, and more that it’s really easy to poke at people and get them riled up.
“You won’t believe what happened” is rarely followed by a feel good story.
I dunno. I doubt i will persuade them either way, so I’d just as soon not talk about it.
totally agree with the desire not to raise the topic.
i get people want members of that party in charge. but are the party members in line for the power matching their historical wants? like, mccain and paul ryan aren’t walking through that door. these leaders come with a lot of really awful baggage and entourage. and that’s before the expected grift topic.
Someone close to me is planning to do the same. Don’t know if they will when the time comes.
