Yeah Covid is not that deadly outside of nursing homes

I think you forgot about “conservative radio show host”… they had a pretty bad run in 2020-2021.

Also true of any cell infected by a virus. If you catch covid, you will carry 1-100 billion virions before your immune system kills all the infected cells.

The mRNA and adenovirus vaccines basically work like a crippled version of the virus that can’t reproduce themselves, and just crank out spike protein instead of the whole covid virus.

But if you are really worried about mRNA vaccines, you can get the novavax covid vaccine, instead. That’s a traditional antigen + adjuvant vaccine. They inject the spike protein directly, instead of getting a few of your cells to make it.

For me, this is the key point.

It only ever makes sense to evaluate the risk of these vaccines relative to the risk from getting covid.

I think the risks of the vaccine are understood to be much lower than from covid. Though both risks are relatively low for younger people. And this is understood through data, not just through “stories” of how both work.

i think a lot of people feel like the vaccines were a technocratic overreach that obscured the choices involved. i think that argument may have weight when talking about the closing of businesses, but not for the vaccines.

You’re totally allowed to knowingly increase your potential of getting other people infected. Unless you had some kind of medical indication against vaccination, I’d think it quite rude and no longer willingly associate with you IRL if you made that choice, but it’s of course your choice. There are a lot of activities that I’d consider ethical, simple, and socially desirable which people have every right to ignore and do whatever they want.

Those who do have medical indications to not get the vaccine should probably avoid it, because hopefully they can rely on the goodwill of those who can receive it. Doesn’t matter if we’re discussing COVID or measles or what.

I don’t need or want a Covid vaccine of any kind.

“a few”

this is a joke, right?

Can you conceive of a situation where the public health threat is large enough that mandatory interventions are necessary even if balance of risks were very low impacts on both sides but slightly negative for the individual?

I can imagine many things.

Covid is very far removed from any such scenario. A grave threat wouldn’t require censorship, coercion, mandates, etc.

The 1.8M - 3M people who are no longer with us due to the first wave would probably disagree with you if they were still around. But then again maybe they wouldn’t.

Nobody knows what the actual numbers are, but 3M isn’t anywhere close to high enough to force a medical intervention on everyone.

Am i allowed to not get a booster and not be considered selfish? I’ve had at least 3 significant exposures (~kids at home) in the last 6 months and have not caught it. Given the exposure is likely a more current strain than the booster, i did not feel like i would get any benefit at all from one.

Of course!

This is just a refreshing display of honest ethicality. I donate blood and I’m on the national bone marrow registry, and the organ donor registry, and have mulled over voluntarily donating a kidney.

Some people don’t want the vaccine because there’s a tiny chance it will hurt you, and because they shouldn’t be coerced into keeping others safe.

There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with looking out for yourself first.

Meaning rational people would respond rationally to a grave threat?

What about censorship of false claims of safety/risk/treatments in a grave threat situation?

No, people would be losing their minds over a grave threat, but they’d be more receptive to a medical intervention when the risk was high.

A hard no to the censorship so many championed during Covid. Who gets to judge truth/falsity? WHO? CDC? FDA? CIA? FBI? Pharma? Google? FB? Twitter? TNI? NFW

This is why you have national plans for a Pandemic response based on a respiratory virus.

It should all be spelled out there.

The US has these plans, but Trump decided to create chaos instead.

You have a very short memory.

I think there is a lot of nuance here.

For one thing, there are different degrees of medical coercion. For example, forcing unvaccinated people to wear a mask after being exposed is coercion, but of a level kind than using law enforcement to make sure everyone is vaccinated.

Deaths are also not necessarily a full indicator of morbidity. As I’m sure you know, many older people who got covid were not necessarily directly killed, but were never the same.

I think the real issue is one of not trusting the establishment’s position on the safety of the vaccines vs the risk of covid. In other words, it is an issue with the objective evaluation of risk. Many people disagree with that evaluation of risk. How far do we empower the establishment’s professional opinion?
