Opening schools increase the spread of COVID-19 ~24%

I wonder how much was in play from the insurance company stating that there would likely be no coverage from law suits related to COVID contraction if the school district didn’t follow general guidance around masking.

I think Marcie ninja’d me.

Stopped at the elementary school office this morning to pick up some school books. Masks can not be required here in Iowa. Lots of teachers/staff in and out. Not one of them masked. Then a new student was in the office, masked. One of the teachers, trying to be sweet and helpful, got really close in her face and asked her what her name was. Uh, personal space please. It was really gross. My internal alarms were going off, need to gtfo of this place.

similarly, I have heard some conversations about possible workers comp claims against employers if they can prove contact tracing from worksite. Not sure if they ever submitted them or if approved, but we are far enough along that we could start seeing more legal implications.

My thought was possible pressure from carriers to deny claims since they should have been covered under WC.

Didnt think they could pay people enough to work in Iowa. Its like a whole state of nothing, but with -20 deg winters.

It’s true… lots of job openings, especially in child care.

Summers are beautiful, though.
Particularly in small, peaceful towns, assuming you can avoid the red hats.

Almost impossible to avoid the red hats.

I assumed everyone lived in DM or CR.

A group of parents here in Utah are suing the Gov… about not allowing schools to implement mask mandates without a declaration from the county health department and approval from the county commission/council. The only county I have heard so far that issued the declaration was Salt Lake County and their council overrode it so districts in the county still can’t issue a mask mandate.

So the parents are suing saying that the government isn’t providing the free education that the constitution requires. It is a novel argument but the local news was able to find law professors that supported both sides of the argument. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Similarly, ACLU going full irony in suing the state of South Carolina because the government isn’t forcing people to do something against their will:

Plus Biden is using the Department of Education to threaten states that don’t allow mandates. I wonder if they are also threatening states and districts who don’t instate mask mandates? Or do they just want to give them the choice?

Isn’t protecting disabled people’s rights mostly about forcing others to do what they don’t want to do (make reasonable accommodations)? I’m not seeing the irony.

But if there are kids that can’t be vaccinated against the flu for medical reasons and are at greater risk of complications from the flu, is it reasonable to require every other kid in the school get the flu vaccine and (and/or)* wear masks so the kids who can’t get vaccinated can attend school safely?

*Since kids under 12 can’t get vaccinated for COVID they have to wear masks. But the rules that are being implimented don’t even take that into account. They are requiring all people at the school be masked regardless of vaccination status (or previous recovery from COVID).

I hope SC has a better defense than “but the flu…”

I mean, the only person I know whose kids couldn’t be vaccinated (like from anything) homeschooled her kids. I think she was gonna homeschool anyway but this was one more reason to do it.

OTOH, our school couldn’t serve peanut butter bc one kid had a severe allergy that could put him in the hospital if he even smelled it.

Yes

My district is no longer posting statistics on how many kids have COVID, but they are for the staff. They also mentioned less than half responded to a voluntary survey that yes, they have been vaccinated. Masks are required by the district. But those board meetings are good for finding out who all the crazy parents are with their hours of public comments and debate.

So far this week, there have been 2 HS football games canceled because of COVID protocols. The 2 teams that were specified as having issues with COVID are East HS and West HS. Those 2 high schools are in the Salt Lake City school district. The mayor of Salt Lake City issued a directive that all public and private schools in the city were required to have mask mandates. The mandates do have an exception for players on sports teams while practicing and competing. No other school district in the state has a mask mandate.
