I used to have cheap office chairs, they would last a few years and disintegrate.
Ten years ago I bought a very used Herman Miller Embody chair for about $150. It is still functional but minor stuff keeps breaking and I’m thinking of moving on. I am happy with the contour of the chair but when I go on Amazon the chair gets lousy reviews and I don’t want to overpay when something else might be better.
Anybody madly in love with a particular type of chair and want to recommend one? Happy to pay for quality.
I think mine is a slightly different version of this: Amazon.com
It’s served me well for the $125 I paid for it at a warehouse clearance sale. Knew a guy who worked in the warehouse who got first dibs on things being auctioned off.
It was already marked down a bit, but then I also had beaucoup reward dollars after just upgrading my 10yo printer – 30% back in points special! – so this chair, new, was basically half price from original.
That was my rationale 15 years ago, but not anymore. Within a year or two the leather finish starts peeling. After about 3 years I get a new gas canister under warranty. After 6 years I scrap it, never having really liked it in the first place.
Funny story. I do move around and fidget a lot, can’t help it. And our company had very old office chairs, it would not be unusual to see old chairs with issues littered all around the place. One day I lean back and my chair gets stuck in the all the way back position. It takes all of my might to undo that, and in doing so I break the chair. So I put it somewhere and got another chair, and the same thing happened, broke another one! I was the “chairbreaker”.
I was invited into the top dog’s office and this had not gone unnoticed, and he asked me if I enjoyed working there! I told him I did some research and that ten years was the average lifespan of an office chair and also told him that many conference rooms served as office chair graveyards. Within a couple of years everyone started getting new office chairs.
I picked this one up for the office at home. $99 in the store, it’s very comfortable. With any luck, I’ll get to keep it longer than the leather one I had that the kids took over and then the older cat likes to jump up on and act semi-feral every so often.
“Those chairs where purchased buy a large corporation which they did not end up needing them, due to covid, or they over purchased, so we purchased the load back, and can offer to our customers a larger discounts, They all still look Brand New, and come with a full Warranty and a full 30 Day money back”
