Hmm, new moon, clear skies, and in a relatively dark area. I’ll take a peak even though aurora sightings this far south are somewhat rare.
Holy crap, G4 conditions with BZ at -60 hit the sensors. This is usually like 90 minutes ahead of the earth impact. Look out east coast when its getting dark.
Bz did more recently point the other direction though, looks like it’s whipping back and forth, but still getting stronger, +79. That’s much higher than the last event, just needs to flip back south.
We were supposed to be able to see it last night, but I wash wakign up at 2 AM to see it.
Waking up in the early morning is for suckers.
It was mostly a dud in North America. The extremely high energy made it interesting further North, but the energy was aligned to the same orientation (North) as Earth’s magnetosphere limiting its effect. It started off with high energy and pointed South, but that was just after Europe went dark and before it was dark here, so no luck for us. It likely would have been spectacular across the US had it remained pointed South for the duration.
We can see the flares and CMEs about 36 hours before they hit earth, but the sensors that detect the actual level and orientation of the energy only give us a 90 minute advanced warning.
F-yeah
