what makes me say WTF is that people are still acting like they’re surprised Trump is doing this kind of stuff, or expecting that he will be somehow shamed into not doing similar stuff in the future because the news says it’s a bad thing to do. I mean, come on, he showed you exactly what he was on the campaign trail in 2016, throughout his whole first Presidency, and then again in the 2024 campaign. Really?

I would assume the device is shielded which means they can’t really locate it even while using modern (and far more sensitive) detectors.
Not sure about the geology of that area (not my field) but having a high background radiation count would also limit their ability to find it (the radioactivity emanating from the device would hide in the background noise).
This was a CIA-mandated mission so the experts were maybe afraid to speak up? Someone at the top thinks it is a good idea so people scramble around to make it happen. I expect a few similar bad ideas might be floating around the current CIA.
