Maybe I am missing something. I would have tried to drop that licence plate years ago. Just too much hassle.

A lot warmer water for some radius or “downstream”?
How much of the “deadly pollutants” reaches the air?
And less oxygen leading to increased fish deaths?

If there are fisheries I wonder if there’s some way to net off the fish to keep them out of the “blast radius” for a few weeks. While fish dying in underwater volcanic eruptions is a wholly natural phenomenon, we’ve depleted fish stocks so much that we probably don’t want to lose more. But here I’m thinking about deaths due to being hit by lava or suddenly much hotter water.

Maybe that’s a ludicrous thing that can’t be done; I have no idea.

As far as longer term less oxygen in the water I assume that if fish not already in the area approach and are having more and more trouble breathing in a low oxygen area they will simply swim away. I’m imagining that it wouldn’t take too long for oxygen levels to normalize.

I assume the pollutants will eventually find their way into the air, but a lot more gradually than if the explosion was above the surface.

I’d think a lot of the pollutants would precipitate out of the water and end up on the ocean floor directly.

Yeah, that was how I read and replied to your post.

But I’m sure that it’s also true that a lot of ash and rock will end up on the ocean floor.

It would be pretty complicated /convoluted to try netting off that big an area between the depth involved, the currents and the uncertainty of how big an explosion would be.

How quickly the oxygen concentrations change will affect mortality rates. Slower change = lower mortality. Mortality varies by type of creature. Sessile animals like mussels, corals, and sponges would die as they can’t move. Slow moving, bottom dwelling fish, snails, crabs and shrimp would also die as they can’t swim fast/far. Tuna and salmon are faster swimmers and would likely have better survival.

If it happens in winter, the water column is well mixed, it would be a bit faster for deoxygenation to happen. In summer if the water column is stratified it would take longer. Either way, it may be slow where we’re talking 1400 m deep, almost a mile. The oxygen would likely have to come from horizontal transport.

If the pollution is gaseous, it’s going to come out pretty quickly.

Yeah, but it won’t plume into the air like a land-bourn volcano, right? Expulsion might be slowed down by the denser water?

I think underwater volcanoes are some what common. I’d imagine an eruption especially a big one, would impact the surrounding quite a bit in the short term.
