This thread is about me asking you to link to a youtube or some easily listened to song that you consider great. A definition of great is in order.
Life or emotional state changing
Technically excellent.
Describable as great peak artistic creation.
I love humans.
We are humans (I hope)
Let us gather greatness about us so we may be greater ourselves.
If we get enough entries I will fore shits and giggles create a playoff like some silly sport competition to determine what we consider the greatest.
Here’s a couple to get us started.. (yeah you might not agree but that is the point isn’t it?)
I think music that affects my emotional state most tend to be sad/depressing, which I’d guess for some may eliminate it from consideration as “great”. I already mentioned one in the funking thread that is certainly this kind of emotional state changer for me - Peter Gabriel singing Here Comes The Flood on Robert Fripp’s Exposure. Music All you fun king funking lovers love - #765 by vjvj. The sparseness and rawness makes it seem more poignant. And the imagery of
“Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky
And as the nail sunk in the cloud
The rain was warm and soaked the crowd”
is striking.
In the other direction, what could be more uplifting than a bird rising from the ashes? The Firebird Suite is all great, but for me it doesn’t really start to affect me until when the bassoon and oboe are trading licks (hmm. again the saddest part) - at about 14:40 in this version. But then it goes way up from there.
