Milestones Toward an Authoritarian Government

It’s fine. Clarence Thomas has clearly supported the free speech right to burn the flag in the past, and he’s a man of honor and integrity.

:smiling_face_with_tear:

Yeah, they’ll charge them with disturbing the peace, vagrancy, or interfering with an officer…

First flag-burning arrest has been made.

This is something that is most commonly said by authoritarian regimes as they consolidate control.

Should there be a separate thread for people pushing back agains the administration? Or does the judge’s statement indicate how lawless the administration is being?

Veteran defense lawyers and law enforcement experts have been warning about the potential for overreach since the federal government muscled its way into policing decisions in the nation’s capital nearly three weeks ago.

Inside the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., on Monday, those tensions broke into open court.

A federal judge dismissed a weapons case against a man held in the D.C. jail for a week — concluding he was subject to an unlawful search.

“It is without a doubt the most illegal search I’ve ever seen in my life,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui said from the bench. “I’m absolutely flabbergasted at what has happened. A high school student would know this was an illegal search.”

Quoting this here instead of it’s original thread, as I feel like you could replace the Fed takover with most any of the other authoritarian actions.

Denying election results, total immunity from criminal prosecution, using office for personal profit, using all agencies to prosecute political and personal enemies, abducting people and sending them to foreign gulags with no recourse in court,…He wanted to be a dictator on day one, and he’s largely been granted that.

I started a thread in 2016 about what Trump could theoretically do to damage the stock market. I don’t remember if the list included “ignore pandemic” and “try to overthrow the US”. Maybe? Or current things like “take over the central bank”, “make up silly tariffs”, and “implement martial law”.

Either way I think it’s hard to tell, because an economy can thrive long-term in spite of disasters, wars, poor policy, and authoritarian rule. Especially if it’s temporary.

Though certainly a single populist authoritarian with enough reach (Chavez) can sink an economy.

Most everything he does is to make himself (or family) more money. If he has to implement martial law, then so be it.
I’m surprised he not simply transferring US wealth to his own offshore accounts.
Well, surprised no one has caught on yet.

it would be a whole lot easier for everyone involved if he just took 100B from the treasury and gtfo.

A lot of people have caught on. They don’t care, as long as they can hate gay people again (among other things, but that’s a big win for them)

Trump said Monday that he was removing Cook because of allegations that she committed mortgage fraud in connection with two residential properties she owns.

The Federal Reserve Act says that a president can remove a member of the Fed’s Board of Governors only “for cause.”

Cook has not been charged, much less convicted, of any crime, including mortgage fraud.

If Trump is successful in removing Cook, it would put him on track to have appointed a majority of the Fed Board of Governors’ seven members.

“We’ll have a majority very shortly,” Trump said at the White House during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. “So that’ll be great.”

I almost put this in “All the President’s Men”, except I refuse to consider the Federal Reserve as an executive-branch office.

Mental aside: So Trump has committed mortgage fraud as well, that tracks.
