Milestones Toward an Authoritarian Government

both panama and vzl have huge assets important to the US. canal is an actual viewable one while oil is in reserve/ground. i suspect the added force for Panama was related to also safeguarding the canal from damage? maybe I’m wrong.

Seems like this trial could get messy fast.

Correct. Bush may have been inspired though by Reagan’s successful invasion of Grenada.

Being a US ally counts for zero these days.

Well, it wasn’t for the Civil War, WWII, Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan but it’s not like Trump is one to care about history or precedent.

Don’t do what Cheetolini wants and he may order your investigation or arrest

This could go in the ICE thread or our Glorious Leader’s darndest things thread…but really, I think this truly belongs here.

the nearly worldwide response to Covid belongs in this thread

Because the Ayatollah is not MAGA.

And 9/11.

Although that one was maybe more US only.

throw 11/22/63 in there too, probably

Did authoritarian things follow that too?

maybe 12/7/1941 too

maybe the assignation itself was the authoritarian thing

I can only speak to COVID and 9/11, since I lived through those. The similarity I see is a population in fear of uncertainty around their own safety acting somewhat irrationally that allowed the government to overstep its normal authority, in many cases with good intentions, but likely in other cases, enabling and acting on information from those with bad intentions.

The emotional tie in to those things faded, and we moved on.

The more concerning are the ones where the government has been increasingly acting on behalf of an increasingly smaller group of officials through the use of EOs and the broader executive branch, bypassing Congress. Neither party is innocent of this. They are largely leading the disinformation rather than being a reaction to (dis)information. Trump’s immigration and ICE policy was not really something people asked for, but they worked to create the narrative, and “solve” the narrative, while doing everything along the way to control the narrative. Sure, there are aspects of those in the earlier cases, but 100% the COVID happening and the planes flying into buildings were not the government’s doing. Now, the government is defining both the problem and the solution.

Well, he is a “religious nationalist”. I wonder if that makes him MAGA adjacent.
