Milestones Toward an Authoritarian Government

I wonder if they will apply the social media rules to people who are coming to the US for World Cup games. Will Trump’s love affair with Infantino win out over his anti-foreign baseline?

“Shana, they bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into. I say, kick 'em out!”

Yeah, he’s already gotten his games, his publicity, and his prize. By the time they’re mucking up WC attendance, it doesn’t matter anymore, except with his supporters, who will see it as a positive.

DHS prefers its facial recognition software to physical IDs. But it’s not clear where the data for the facial recognition software comes from, and the idea that the government has built its own database that can determine citizenship from facial recognition with a suitably small error rate but not disclose the source of the data is cray cray.

Mubashir said he was in the car with officers for about 20 minutes, asking them repeatedly if he could show them his I.D. They refused, he said.

Officers asked if they could take a picture of him to check if he was a U.S. citizen. Mubashir told reporters that he declined their request, because, “How would a picture prove I’m a U.S. citizen?”

Officers took him to the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building at Fort Snelling, which houses immigration court and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices. They took his fingerprints and then one of the officers allowed Mubashir to show his I.D., proving his U.S. citizenship, Mubashir said. He was then immediately allowed to leave.

Cross posted in the ICE thread, but certainly equally appropriate for this thread

Instead of the lovely scenes currently displayed on many National Park passes, some will now display Dear Leader instead. https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/11/politics/trump-face-replace-images-national-parks-passes-lawsuit

What a lovely way to honor a guy that drastically cut National Park services

It’s appropriate: Cut National Park services, funding, and employees, put your name on passes. Cut Institute for Peace funding, fire almost all the staff, put your name on the building. Come up with a concept of a plan for a ballroom, but no actual blueprints, tear down the entire East Wing to provide incentive for actually finishing the plans.

It’s pretty pathetic that “disabled”, “accessibility”, and “female” are scary words that should be avoided in government applications/documents. Male is ok.

Eta: women is also a banned word. Men isn’t banned.

Here is what Heritage Action tweeted:

“President Trump has made it clear to Indiana leaders: if the Indiana Senate fails to pass the map, all federal funding will be stripped from the state. Roads will not be paved. Guard bases will close. Major projects will stop. These are the stakes and every NO vote will be to blame.”

Lt Gov apparently confirming Dear Leader did threaten federal funding

I thought Indiana was a solid red state. Why did their Senate reject Trump’s bullying to accept redistricting? This is encouraging that they stood up to him.

Probably the bullying part.

And maybe the tariffs.

Because when you gerrymander, the margins in each district typically get smaller and the recent special election results would suggest that that might not be safe

“Initially we were told we only had 30 days to come up with a reason to be ready to sue UC,” said Ejaz Baluch, a former senior trial attorney who was assigned to investigate whether Jewish UCLA faculty and staff faced discrimination on campus that the university did not properly address. “It shows just how unserious this exercise was. It was not about trying to find out what really happened.”

One of the few parts of Atlas Shrugged that still rings true to me is when John Galt says something to the effect of “the actions you decide to do will never be my fault”

That’s literally what police are for, and explicitly not what the military is for.

I think a lot of Indiana Reps hate Trump because of his treatment of Mie Pence

Could have also gone in news that makes you say WTF

How should a military commander respond if they determine they have received an unlawful order?

Request to retire — and refrain from resigning in protest, which could be seen as a political act, or picking a fight to get fired.

From a Reuters article titled Unprecedented errors are eroding the credibility of Trump’s Justice Department

In a subsequent legal opinion, a federal magistrate judge said the errors were part of a broader pattern of unprecedented prosecutorial missteps, resulting in a 21% dismissal rate of the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s office’s criminal complaints over eight weeks, compared to a mere 0.5% dismissal rate over the prior 10 years.
