We put down one of our cats today. Sam was 18.5, so he had a damn good run. Sweetest and most mild mannered cat I ever knew (well, I really only ever knew 2 cats. His sister is still alive and kicking and will continue to torment me while I wfh).
He became really finnicky eating a couple weeks ago which was odd b/c he loves his food. Took him in, had a blood test and it came back that his kidneys basically shut down. And it has been all downhill the past 10 days.
As much as I love having pets, having to put them down is completely awful. Making the decision to do it is a lot easier than telling our kids. The 10 year old took it much better than the 13 year old. Although the 13 year old knew it was coming, he was devastated. Over the last couple years Sam and him became best buds, with Sam always looking for his lap and always laying with him at night while he read before bed.
Here is Sam on the left (with his sister on the right) from this summer.
