Maui wildfires

Direct Relief is also very helpful

He resigned last night.

I don’t blindly go to my basement when i hear a storm siren, and it’s sunny outside. Similarly, i don’t think someone will blindly run for the hills that are on fire if they hear a tsunami siren.

But that is probably obvious to everyone who was not in charge of maui siren system last week.

News articles today about roads partially blocked by utility crews replacing downed power poles during fires. Horrible miscalculation and lack of communication. Plenty of lessons to be learned.

I didn’t even think about the loss of dental records or entire families being lost.

From the article:

Forensic anthropologists may use dental records and fingerprints to help confirm a person’s identity. But in Lahaina, where dental offices were burned down and where the fire was so severe it incinerated cars and melted metal, traditional methods may not apply in each case.

“For individuals who die in mass fatalities from burning or an explosion, it can fragment the body, and very high temperatures can break down the DNA molecules, so it makes the identification process more difficult,” said Robert Mann, a forensic anthropologist and medical professor at the University of Hawaii, who is assisting in Maui.

But it’s not impossible, he said.

“You can make an identification from one bone or one tooth,” he said. “That one bone holds DNA in it.”

A spokesperson for rapid DNA-testing company ANDE Corp. said it had dispatched a disaster-response team to assist in Hawaii. The company’s instrument creates a unique DNA profile for the human remains, and while that can be done within a couple of hours, awaiting a matching DNA sample, such as a cheek swab from a direct family member — a parent, child or sibling — is what often delays the procedure.

The wildfires in Maui led to entire families going missing and feared dead. Some victims may have no known direct family members, while others may be international travelers or from outside Hawaii, and so direct family members may not be available to provide a DNA sample easily.

Most companies have been backing up important records to clouds or someplace away from their business for decades. Not sure why a dentist wouldn’t do the same thing.

I’m not sure that an old school dentist in Maui would necessarily be up on the latest & greatest in cloud technology. Obviously if it’s out there, great, but I don’t know that it’s reasonable to assume that all Maui dental records are available on the cloud.

And then if they are there’s also the question of accessing them if the people with access are no more.

i’m wondering how many were lost in the ocean. Did all the bodies turn up or will there be more? Or will they even turn up at all?

This made the news over here in the UK

I read that recently. Amazing! They think it was a combination of the roof and the river stones ( put there to stop the house getting too damp) that encircled the house

It would be interesting to see more of the surrounding landscape as well as a “before” pic.

Difficult to really say much w/o knowing what material(s) other buildings were built with (c.f. DTNF’s post above) as well as seeing if anything else near by “survived”.

What struck me the most is the lack of debris in all of the other lots.

Non-native ground cover was definitely a contributing factor in what happened. A small factor behind the negligence of the electric company, but still a contributing factor.

Seems “missing persons” lists are overcounted as well.

Officials: “We have a list, but we’re not going to publish it. You’ll just have to believe us.”
Press: “OK.”

It’s amazing the damage a TV show that has been off the air for 46 years can do.
