Maui wildfires

Not even Usain Bolt could outrun that.

they’re saying ~1000 people still missing. It’s a small island. Where can they be? I fear the answer is very grim

:grimacing:

If the fire was spreading a mile a minute then that is indeed very bleak.

The Governor is saying now that it’s very hard to know how many are missing since so many had to run without anything including their phones. Contacting anyone on the missing list is challenging.

A friend of mine worked helping care for a large Maui estate. He’s OK, but homeless - his house is a total loss (burned). His future is unknown.

If they are indeed not missing (with family or friends), then how do they know they are on the list?

It’s hard to know where to donate in these situations. I usually donate to the Red Cross, because I am very wary of donating to religious organizations. I split my donation this time between the Red Cross and the Aloha United Way, I hope that was the right call.

Yikes

Looks like another power company about to go bankrupt (like PG&E in Paradise). :frowning:

I imagine identifying bodies could be challenging. I heard about post-mortem X-rays.

Hope many of the missing are safe and just not crossed off the list due to communication issues.

i’m wondering how the list is compiled. Is it just 13k people used to live here and 12k are accounted for so 1k is missing? If so, theres a lot of holes in those numbers.

Or is it survivors/friends/family calling/looking for XYZ and can’t find XYZ so XYZ goes on the list?

I’m assuming the former, plus maybe lists of tourists based on flights and/or hotel reservations???

And I suppose they could use flight data to determine which residents were not on Maui at the time of the fire too.

I suppose it’s plausible that ~1000 people escaped to friends/family on and off island and either are unable to or don’t care to report that they are safe. Hope that’s the case

I doubt very many of them escaped to other islands without anyone knowing. Airlines will surely have submitted all of their manifests going back at least a couple of months and most Maui residents won’t own airplanes or boats large enough for inter-island travel. Maybe a few college students who have been gone for quite a while are simply unaccounted for in that way.

But if people escaped to a safer part of the island without their cell phones or their phones aren’t working then it’s possible that they’re safe on Maui but no one knows it.

Hopefully that scenario accounts for all/most of the missing, but I fear there are more bodies to be found. I hope I’m wrong about that.

I never give to Red Cross. They have a terrible name in other countries. Just Google Red Cross and Scandal.

It’s faith-based, but earns high praise from both Republicans and Democrats alike (Bill Clinton and George W Bush in particular)… I like World Vision.

Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) is often a good choice if you are specifically looking to avoid a faith-based organization, but I’m not seeing that they’re getting involved in Maui. I’m not sure how much of the need there is medical at the moment so that’s not a criticism… it’s just that Maui might not be exactly where they’re most needed right now.

World Vision is on the ground in Maui already, and you can earmark donations for the USA specifically (but they do good work the whole world over so either way your money will be put to good use.)

Global Empowerment and World Kitchen are 2 places I donate and it looks like they have a presence on Maui right now.
