March Madness 2025 (a.k.a the annual Rock-Paper-Scissors tournament)

I see that @soyleche fell for the classic blunder . . . he’s engaging in a land war in Greenland!!

Lets go Ted!

Quick Summary

:skull_and_crossbones:

We all knew the :skull_and_crossbones: was coming - that’s the unfortunate effect of having a Winner Take All Game 7, and even more importantly with this match, it’s for the last seat in the Elite Eight! :astonished:

TheNotoriousLINUS and AbstractActuary have had quite the streaky battle, with TNLinus winning the first three matches, but then AbstractActuary winning the next three to force a Game 7 (apparently AA doesn’t go away all that easily after all!).

This is the second match of the tournament where a 3-0 lead became a 3-3 tie going into Game 7. The first time was the OldTimer/Klaymen matchup, where OldTimer got the early lead, but then struggled to close the door on Klaymen… but eventually did in Game 7. (After all, it’s hard to win 4 games in a row in the tournament, right?)

Let’s see if history repeats itself here… so what happened?

P ThNtrsLINUS
P AbstractAct

Of course it won’t be done in one throw! :astonished:

(Hey, that happened in the OT/Klaymen match as well! :face_with_raised_eyebrow: )

So what happened next?

P-P ThNtrsLINUS
P-R AbstractAct

TheNotoriousLINUS advances to the Elite Eight!

… and for those of you wondering, yes - that was the exact same set of second throws as well!

:tfh:

That was an excellent match outta you both - can’t ask for a better way to wrap up the Sweet Sixteen round! Well done!!

Meanwhile, all the other regions are getting their early games in as they work towards the seat in the Final Four. The action will be getting pretty intense pretty quickly with so much on the line now, so stay tuned, and keep sending in those throws! :+1:

Quick Summary:

(insert blank here)

That’s right - for the first time since the first handful of updates, there are no ‘Quick Summary’ icons to be shown. That’s the catch when we get down to Elite Eight - fewer matches may mean fewer chances of having a summary icon, but we all know that it’s the building pressure that’s the story here!

In this update, we see our defending champion avoid the :oh_noes: scenario by pulling out the win, whereas the VA-soyleche battle continues its back-and-forth.

I’m thinking that tomorrow we could see some extra movement, being Friday and all… everyone’s gonna have time to get in a coupla throws, and that will really set the stage for next week… so stay tuned! (And keep sending those throws! :+1:)

Quick Summary:

:oh_noes:

We have a short, but very interesting update this time around. Short, because we only have one match completed (the other 3 are each halfway there). Interesting, because the one match that is completed is now in the :oh_noes: stage, and we have a Regional titleholder hanging by a thread!! :astonished: Looks like VA’s got quite the task ahead… but remember - they didn’t name regions after losers, so I wouldn’t call this one over just yet.

Stay tuned to see how long VA can hang on (and keep sending in those throws! :+1:).

Happy Monday, everyone!

Welcome back to the RPS tournament, where we’re currently down to the Elite Eight, thus every match is for a ticket to the Final Four - talk about pressure-packed matches here! :nervous: :excited: :fascinated:

In what I believe is a first, each Regional Titleholder has made it to the Elite Eight, so we could have a repeat winner in each region! :astonished: Let’s see how they are all doing:

  • JFG has rallied to tied up that match 2-2, so it’s now down to a Best-Of-3 match - now we’ll find out who has a strong sprint left in them!
  • EC has jumped out to a 2-0 lead… but as we just saw above, a 2-0 lead can go away in a flash, so SteveGrondin doesn’t have to panic just yet… but a win in the next match would look pretty good about now.
  • skysn93’s got an early jump on TNLinus in the opening game of their match - probably not a surprise, given TNLinus is just coming off a grueling 7-game match… there’s no rest for the weary here!

… and that leads us to our last match, which you may recall was in :oh_noes: status, as VA was down 3-1 to soyleche. Could we have our first Final Four entrant?? Let’s find out!

Good job @soyleche. I needed to move on to get some . . . umm . . . :quot: real :quot: work done.

Apparently SteveGrondin was inspired by soyleche’s victory over the reigning Regional titleholder, and decided to start a rally accordingly (and thus EC’s sweep is off the table).

Go, Linus!

Tuesday Midday Update

We’re still not into icon status yet, as SteveGrondin apparently took careful notes of what JFG did, and followed those instructions to tie up the EC-SG match at 2-2 as well.

Meanwhile the TNLinus-skysn93 match has followed the first part of the pattern of the other two active matches, and now has gone 2-0. Now the question is, can TNLinus follow up on the second part of the pattern and bring the match back to 2-2?

We’ve got two matches now in a Best-Of-3 situation, which means we’re gonna have a couple of player in :oh_noes: status soon enough… stay tuned to see who will soon be living on the edge!
(And keep sending in those throws, of course! :+1:)

Quick Summary:

:oh_noes: :oh_noes: :oh_noes:

That’s right, folks - not one, not two, but all three matches are a single throw away from being over! We expected that from two of the matches, as they were both knotted up at 2-2, and thus the next game was gonna put someone on the cliff’s edge, but we got a bonus resident with TNLinus joining the crowd!

And you know what else is interesting about that cliff-crowd? All three of them are the Regional Titlehodlers! That’s right, we could be 3 throws away from having a completely new Final Four! I wouldn’t’ve guessed that going into the Elite Eight with all four Regional Titleholders still alive (and I still wouldn’t count them out yet! :tfh:), but this is a rather interesting turn of events! :astonished:

So stay tuned… it’s about to get even more interesting! (And keep sending in those throws! :+1:)

Just when you think i rock, i scissors! Absolutely unpredicatable! I should be a rng! Ha.

On a very special update…

In out last update, we were left here:
:oh_noes: :oh_noes: :oh_noes:

Which means this might be the most pivotal update we’ve had in RPS this year - all 3 matches could be one throw away from having a Final Four entrant! Equally as intriguing is in all cases it is the defending Regional Titleholder that is on the dangerous side, living on the edge… will we lose anyone? Everyone? Let’s find out!

We’ll work through the matches in order:

We start with the JFG/TedHoffman match, where TedHoffman is up 3-2 on our defending champion. Will we have a Game 7 Winner Take All on our hands?

It was decided quickly - it only took one throw…

P JFG
S TedHoffman

… and TedHoffman has dethroned the champ and punched a ticket to the Final Four!

Next up is the EC/SteveGrondin match match, where SteveGrondin is up 3-2 on our defending champion. Will we have a Game 7 Winner Take All on our hands?

It was decided quickly - it only took one throw…

S EzeklCumber
P StevGrondin

… and EC hangs on to force a Winner Take All Game 7!!

Finally is the TNLinus/skysn93 match, where skysn93 is up 3-0. Will we have our first sweep of the tournament?

It was decided quickly - it only took one throw…

… to have our first tie of the update!

S ThNtrsLINUS
S skysn93

(Gotta have a little extra drama to close with, right?)

So how much longer did this go?

Just one more throw…

S-S ThNtrsLINUS
S-R skysn93

… and skysn93 scores the first :broom: of the season and punches a ticket to the Final Four!

Wow! Talk about some amazing matches! I hope y’all enjoyed that as much as I did - now I just need to go catch my breath… phew
