He was an underwriter not an actuary but … I can think of a couple of folks in our profession I’d pull the trail markers for
Indeed, quite the team building event.

We can use this thread to talk about coworkers past or present whom we’d leave on a mountain
I’ve got a few. I’d probably be named by quite a few as well.
This is one of the more likely ways I die.
Team building, team culling, whatever it takes.
I don’t have experience hiking at those elevations, but from what I gather from the people I know who do, it is no joke. If I were in leadership at that company there would be some serious reflection and discussions about what the team did.
London-based Beazley…
Thats going to make for some interesting water cooler conversations in the City.
What is that it’s an INSURANCE company!!
IIRC LA Law, back in the day, did an episode on this very topic. These were a thing back in the 80’s. It was about how people who work for companies who do this feel pressured to go on these extreme outings in order to prove themselves to sociopathic bosses. Guy got hurt doing it and I think won his case.
I thought they went out of vogue in the 90’s
Motocross was a big thing at Enron.
Ahh… Not really surprised. The London personal lines companies use too many consultants for it to be a team.
If you have a bunch of likely high achievers from a financial setting do something adventurous, they need a mindset shift regarding the consequences of failure. What little I remember from the trip leader training I did in college for our caving club was the emphasis on “this is dangerous, people die doing this all the time”, the dangers of over-confidence, the ability to judge based on the weakest link at the time. Did they even have a trip leader?
Yeah, what happened here raises a lot of questions about the planning

If it’s not a wrongful death claim, it’s going to be a “hostile work environment” claim from the guy who was smart enough not to go but then chided and denied a promotion. Or a “sexual harassment” claim from a woman who was either excluded or assaulted on the trip. Or any one of a dozen other ways it could go sideways
i’m like: my dudes, I’m a middle-aged person w/ chronic pain. gfy
when people go golfing or bowling, I can’t do that shit. My neck & shoulders are screwed up.
Not everybody is a young idiot (or an old idiot, as the case may be)
The key to following someone up a mountain is being capable of looking at their shoes. That disqualifies a lot of actuaries.
A good way to get them to open up??
