Leaving a job after a few months

When I moved out of my parents house for my first job in a different state I did a whole weekend trip to try it out. It’s exciting!

I visited and didn’t really like it but those close to me all told me I should take it. I am a total idiot

This is the correct answer.

If I interview for a job and am rejected, how long before I can apply again? Or does it depend on the company/situation?

Is it the same posting? What kind of vibe did you get from them? I wouldn’t bother if it’s the same posting / requisition number. If they interviewed you and rejected you and the job is still open, it means they decided that they’d rather have an empty chair than you. I’d probably wait at least a year and even then don’t get your hopes up unless you are materially better qualified for the second position than you were for the first.

If it’s only been a few months and they liked you a lot but there was someone else they liked just slightly better then they’ll probably reach out to you.

I had one rejection that was obviously in the latter category. Hiring manager called me himself and said they really wanted to hire both of us but it wasn’t in their budget and the other candidate met their qualifications better (which is true… I didn’t have experience in their primary product line.) But they hoped that I’d apply the next time they had an opening; they just didn’t know when that might be.

If you got that sort of a vibe then I think you could apply almost immediately although it’s slightly suspect if they didn’t reach out to you.

I guess if it’s something in between I’d wait 6 months and only for a different position.

If I was rejected for a specific position and it was still open I wouldn’t reapply-whatever happened there happened. If you asked someone out and they rejected you in favor of being single, obviously they do not hold you in very high regard.

I meant the company in general-different role on a different team, etc.

For some companies they just sort of consider you for the program overall if you are still taking exams, and then decide where to place you if they make you an offer. What would you think for timeline in that case?

As fas as sending out applications(if they don’t lead to interviews) idk-I once got an offer at a company after applying there a solid dozen times and finally getting through.

9-12 months. If they were close to making you an offer in a shorter timeframe they’ll probably reach out to you.

It doesn’t hurt to apply sooner than that, but unlikely to be successful.
