Half Baked

I watched it because several people said it was one they’ve watched many times. I was unimpressed. There were some funny parts, but it was way too over the top and obvious for me. The cameos were humorous just for who they were.

The Father. very well done and said story of a man with dementia. much more from his perspective than I believe I have ever seen in a film.

Hopkins definitely deserved the Oscar. the big differenciator for me is there is no doubt who the lead is. in Ma Rainey, Boseman was mostly the lead, in great role that could have won in another year

Promising Young Woman - not fully what I expected, but I think that made it better. I liked it, well done, but not completely satisfied for how it played out

Summary

I get he couldn’t be tried again, but with the tape she could have still ruined his life. I get she was a damaged person, but can’t equate her “suicide” with the need for him to go to jail.

Magic (1978), with Anthony Hopkins and Ann-Margaret.
Good, but a big chunk of development missing when Corky (Hopkins) changes from being a failed Magician to a successful Ventriloquist, and all the trappings that the movie entails.

Infinite (2021), the new Mark Wahlberg flick on Paramount. Basic premise is that there are some people that have perfect recall of past lives. There are two factions, one that wants to help mankind and leave the world a better place than they found it and one that wants to burn the world down. These people slowly regain their history as they mature. Mark’s character was hurt in an accident and never regained his past. He was a very important guy in his previous life and both sides are looking for him. Not a very good movie and I was LOLing at the ending, just too ridiculous. I guess it was a fun ride but pretty silly execution of the story.

Murder Mystery (2019)

Nothing great, but enjoyable. Adam Sandler, a cop who keeps trying to become a detective and keeps failing the exam, and Jennifer Aniston are a couple who, after 15 years of marriage, finally go on a honeymoon to Europe and end up being murder suspects. It has a Hallmark movie feel to it. I’m not a big Adam Sandler fan, but found him only mildly annoying, which is good. The movie had a decent amount of Hallmark-style humor, which is what really what made the movie enjoyable. The starting wasn’t very good (and Sandler was at his most annoying), but it improved as it went on.

One important aspect of this part of the plot: They’re essentially sneaking on a yacht under false pretenses.

Seeking A Friend for the End of the World (2012) - Wasn’t sure what I was expecting but strange movie with unbelievable premise. Guess I should have expected that with Steve Carell as the lead.

It wasn’t false pretenses. They were invited, although not by the host.

One could argue there really weren’t any important aspects of the plot, which is part of the reason why the movie ended up being enjoyable and part of the reason why it was by no means great.

But, yeah. I’m on a boat.

Our Friend. I needed something to permit a controlled release of some sad emotions. It did the trick.

Extracurricular Activities - High school setting, one kid has an after school job as a hitman to get rid of parents of the kids in school for a fee and if he deems the parents are “bad”. Much better than I make it sound, but don’t want to give anything away.

Pleasantville - I thought I had seen this in its entirety, but I had not. Now I have. Interesting to watch in today’s environment.

Black Widow - good Marvel action film with nothing really new or ground breaking.

“The Great Race” (1965). What a stupid movie. Meh to slapstick. Meh to pie fights.

World of Tomorrow (2015) by Don Hertzfeldt (short)

This had been on my list for a while after I’d heard it mentioned positively on a few different youtube movie channels. I ended up buying a bluray directly from his website, as interlibrary loan claimed that literally nobody has it. And I bought a bluray player, because it only comes in bluray and I didn’t have one. It is actually a collection of about 10 shorts, all animation of sorts. I’ve only watched a couple so far. He’s since created a couple other episodes of World Of Tomorrow, but my disk doesn’t have them on it. Hertzfeldt had a Kickstarter to create a disk with all 3 episodes, but it turns out I missed the closing date by about a month and they don’t have any extras. So I bought an earlier collection.

World of Tomorrow is definitely different. It’s funny in general and done fairly simply but interestingly visually. The plot is that a clone (of a clone) of a little girl brings her on a tour of the future through time travel. There’s not much to describe beyond that. It’s interesting and funny.

The second one I watched (Wisdom Teeth (2010)) was funny and a bit gross. And reminded me of De Duva: The Dove (1968) because of the language and subtitling.

Across the Universe - Seen it multiple times but I enjoy it each time I re-watch it. Excellent use of The Beatles music.

Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar - Not really my cup of tea but there were a few funny bits.

Dumplin’ (Netflix movie)

I cried.

As a guy, I enjoyed the movie. I didn’t cry, though. :face_with_head_bandage:

Cosmic Sin on Netflix starring Bruce Willis. Save you mind, skip it. I am not a physicist, but the science in this one is stunningly bad. But not as bad as the acting. Not sure why it was a top 10 for the day earlier this week. Maybe because it was something new.

Gunpowder Milkshake - if you’re a fan of bloody assassin movies this will be right up your alley, if not you can probably skip this one.
